House Democrats unite on Afghanistan exit
Source: Politico

It’s more angst than outright anger, but House Democrats are showing real unity for the first time in pressuring President Barack Obama on Afghanistan — with influential moderates now expressing their impatience alongside the anti-war left that drove the early Iraq war debate.

There’s no immediate threat to war funding, but the shift in the president’s party can’t be ignored by the White House going into the 2012 elections.

This was dramatized last week when all but eight Democrats endorsed demands that Obama come up with plans this summer to accelerate the withdrawal of U.S. forces and pursue a negotiated settlement with “all interested parties” in Afghanistan, including the Taliban.

The amendment — offered to the annual defense authorization bill — narrowly failed, 215-204, with 26 Republicans joining in the effort and capturing the most attention. But the far greater dynamic was inside the Democratic caucus, where the lead sponsor, Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern opened the door for his colleagues by taking out any fixed timetable for withdrawal. . .

1. "alongside the anti-war left that drove the early Iraq war debate"
Well, that's a bunch of crap. The so-called 'anti-war left' was told, in no uncertain terms, to STFU or risk being sent to GITMO.

There was no 'debate'. :grr:

5. I had to re-read that line in disbelief...
Anyone remember "You're either with us, or you're against us?"

The anti-war left was effectively silenced, thanks in no small part to "the librul media," who essentially ignored the anti-war protests in favor of looping every supposed 'terror threat' they could come up with...

6. needs to be labeled - WARNING:historical rewrite in progress!
"Events reported by this tabloid may appear backwards and rose-colored"
"Correspondence with actual happenings not to exceed 0.02%"
"May cause shocked disbelief, excessive facepalming, and hysterical laughter if taken without salt"

2. Bring them HOME - bring them ALL HOME
Stand up to the M-I complex and the POURING of borrowed dollars into hands that appreciate NONE of it. Let the Afghans grow poppys and regulate the distribution of it to users here in the USA - said users signing a waiver to forgoo any public funds for treating their addiction. EVERYBODY WINS!

Legalize pot. hire chartered, regulated aircraft to bring it up from south of the border and let those who want it - have it. One more "war" ended, with users and suppliers all winning. The forces committed to interdiction will be replaced by regulatory personnel - no loss of jobs. PLUS.... ALL the lives that will be saved starting the moment this yanks the rug out from under the raging competition for "turf".

C'mon! If a dummy like me can figure this out, what the hell does that say about those in DC??? :dunce:

3. I'm all for this, obviously.

I'm not an against-wars-at-all-times kind of guy. Sometimes, it's morally understandable in my opinion. However, I don't think this particular war is helping anyone and the time has come.

4. Totally agree. Some wars need fighting. It's time to end this one.
