US presses China on North Korea (Cheney rejects Taiwan independence)
US Vice President Dick Cheney has presented new evidence to Beijing about North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, US officials have said.

__snip__

Mr Cheney urged China, a key ally of Pyongyang, to flex its diplomatic muscle in resolving the crisis.

He also called for maintaining the status quo in China-Taiwan relations.

In a speech to students in Shanghai, Mr Cheney said the US did not support Taiwanese independence but defended Washington's obligation to provide the island with defensive arms.

1. Cheney changes US policy to get China's favor
Decreeing that the US did not support Taiwanese independence was a major shift in US policy. Cheney, the article says, didn't come to China to mess with US policy (yeah, right).

Anyway, it looks like the Taiwanese will have to pay the price for our policy on North Korea, which is to get China to deal with it.

4. Opposing secession by Taiwan is not a change in policy.
Every administration has opposed secession by Taiwan since relations with the People's Republic were established in 1979 by Carter. I agree with this policy, and I certainly believe John Kerry does as well.

6. That's better than nothing I suppose
Though the hypocrisy in saying Taiwan is part of China and in the same breath saying that we will still treat it as separate annoys me.

7. Cheney talks out of his ass and mouth at the same time.
He says we don't support Taiwan as an independant country (so that means it is part of China) and yet reserves the right to sell and protect Taiwan from China (whoops, hands off you commies!)

Uncka Dick sure luvs money!
