Three Republican state senators who are likely to be scheduled for recall elections on July 12 are asking that judges stop the elections because of alleged irregularities in the filing of recall petitions.
State Sens. Dan Kapanke, R-La Crosse; Luther Olsen, R-Ripon; and Randy Hopper, R-Fond du Lac, all want judges to block the state Government Accountability Board from calling elections based on the recall petitions filed in April by groups seeking to recall the GOP senators.
Lawyers for the GOP senators are seeking to block the elections using virtually the same arguments unanimously rejected by the GAB on May 23. In complaints filed Tuesday in Dane County Circuit Court, Eric McLeod, lawyer for the senators, argues there was no proof that the people who filed the initial paperwork for the recall efforts were actually members of the recall committees that registered with the GAB.
Graeme Zielinski, a spokesman for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, said he hadn't yet seen the complaints but added that if they are similar to what their attorney argued before the GAB they are "totally without merit," and laughable given what he described as wide-scale systemic fraud inherent to the Republican recall efforts targeting Democratic senators........................................
