Celebrity weatherman with 'the double life' cleared of rape

June 1, 2011

A celebrity weatherman has been acquitted of rape charges, German judges said, after a high-profile trial that captivated the attention of the media and public over the last year.

Joerg Kachelmann, a 52-year-old public TV network weatherman, had denied the charges by state prosecutors that he raped his ex-girlfriend, 37, at knifepoint in February 2010 just before flying to Canada to work at the Vancouver Olympics.
Kachelmann, a Swiss national, was arrested at Frankfurt airport leading to a case that stunned Germany more than a year before former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested at a New York airport and later charged with trying to rape a hotel maid.

Details of Kachelmann's private life have filled newspaper columns and TV news broadcasts. Prosecutors had demanded a prison term for Kachelmann of four years and three months. His defence attorney argued it was consensual sex. "There was no other verdict that this court could reach," Kachelmann's lawyer Johann Schwenn told reporters afterwards. "Herr Kachelmann has been treated in a most shabby fashion."
The rape trial of Kachelmann, Germany's top weatherman and famed for his rumpled appearance and entertaining reports, had dominated the local media for the last nine months as it published salacious details of his tangled love life.

Germany's top feminist Alice Schwarzer, who "observed" the trial for Germany's most infamous and most sexist tabloid "Bild", knew of course from the start that the accused was guilty. Well, the court wasn't convinced, so she will have to tell us all about it in her upcoming book on the matter.

in this case may be what is most interesting for some people.

Although Alice Schwarzer only claimed "he was living with 6 women at the same time, all of whom he had promised to marry" and had to publicly apologize for this lie after Kachelmann obtained a restraining order.

Resumé by the German satirical magazine "Titanic":

After Kachelmann verdict: one trial, many losers

7. kind of like you become a top chef, I guess
Started out as a liberal writer in the seventies, founded the magazine "Emma", and soon became the most eminent voice of feminism in Germany. During the eighties she descended into the mainstream - media as well as politics - became a fixture on TV (including gameshows) and a proponent for prohibitions and harsher laws (anti-porn, anti-prostitution, the usual).
