South Carolina lawmaker files suit to block governor's order
By Harriet McLeod

CHARLESTON, South Carolina | Mon Jun 6, 2011 12:05pm EDT

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - The Republican leader of the South Carolina Senate filed suit on Monday to challenge Republican Governor Nikki Haley's executive order for lawmakers to return to work.

The legislature ended its regular session last Thursday and scheduled an extra session to start June 14 in order to finish work on the budget and other issues.

But the governor immediately ordered them to come back into session starting Tuesday without pay to complete work on her legislative agenda.

Saying Haley can't do that without extraordinary circumstances, Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell asked the state Supreme Court to intervene.

1. Nimrata Is At It Again
One thing is for sure, the hatred and despise for our new Lovernator knows no political bounds. She is hated on both sides of the aisle.

5. Her Actual Name Is
Nimarata Nikki Randhawa. She married a dude named Michael Haley, a former officer in the SC Armay National Guard.

So, "Nimrata" is neither a mysogynist nor racist term. Hope this helps.

7. Thanks. Wasn't focused on the word/name, but on how she's doing,
and wondered whether anti-Nikki feelings were substantive or b.s.-related.

6. Here is a link to an article that tries to explain what she did and the consequences:
How Haley’s action rocked political landscape

There have been pitched battles before as lawmakers wrangled over bills in the final days of the legislative session, but lawmakers say Gov. Nikki Haley’s stunning display of political gamesmanship in this Legislature’s final hours has ignited a strange brew of anger and admiration and disturbed alliances in ways yet to be determined.

Thursday was supposed to be the last day of the legislative session. Lawmakers were supposed to wrap up work, then adjourn for a quick break before reconvening as previously agreed on June 14 to grapple with any vetoes issued by Haley, the state budget and the once-in-a-decade redrawing of House, Senate and congressional election maps.

But Haley’s insistence that lawmakers return earlier, on Tuesday, to act on key pieces of her legislative agenda has divided Republicans and prompted the Senate’s top leader, Senate Pro Tem Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, to prepare a lawsuit challenging her action that could go to the S.C. Supreme Court on Monday.

Democrats, including those who share her reform agenda, say Haley’s action could prove to be a breaking point in their relationship with the governor.

She has been pissing off people all over the state.

She wants to make the legislature pass a bill that will give the governor more control. She was trying to work with the Repubs, but she is Sanford's protege and they are watching her like a hawk. This move will not endear her to anybody and may kill reform outright. The bill isn't a bad piece of legislation, but trying to make them pass it was a very bad idea.

She needed to show more patience as hard as that may be for her. SC has one of the weakest executive branches, and she won't get very far with these types of moves. She may have been elected, but she isn't trusted completely by the Rethugs because of her ties to Sanford. She is acting like him now.

Haley also committed a mortal sin by showing bad manners. She didn't invite all the Dems to a cookout that had been a bipartisan event under other governors. That may seem like a small issue, but it doesn't earn her any points. The Dems feel dissed, and everybody is tut-tutting over the latest evidence of her of 'not being raised right.' Don't bother trying to point out the irony of squabbling over manners. It is impossible to decode SC politics.
