Weiner faces Democratic rebukes, ethics probe
Source: The Washington Post

A day after admitting a “hugely regrettable mistake,” Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) faced a battle for his political survival on two fronts: within his Democratic caucus and inside the House ethics committee.

With the House out of session till Monday, Weiner is likely to spend the rest of this week in his Brooklyn-Queens district following Monday’s admission that for the past three years he has engaged in sexually explicit communications with women in various online settings. Weiner announced Monday that he would not resign and intends to run for an eighth term in 2012.

To do that, Weiner must first weather a storm inside his own Democratic caucus to see what sort of support he has going forward and then navigate a likely ethics investigation. As some prominent Republicans began calling for his resignation, Weiner found few friends among his fellow Democrats.

While House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) demanded the ethics probe, another key Democrat issued a thinly veiled statement leaving open the possibility that Weiner should consider resignation. Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), Pelosi’s handpicked leader of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, condemned Weiner’s “deep personal failure” in engaging in the online sexual discussions with at least six women over the past three years, ending by suggesting Weiner has to think about his own decision whether to stay in office.

1. Weiner must resign. He is a laughing stock and embarrasses our party.

2. Although you've been here since 2001, are you prepared for the "thank you for your concern"
responses, the STFU and the troll accusation responses?

I agree, he is a laughingstock and his credibility is pretty much shot. The Republicans, however, love the distraction.

27. Did you call for Bubba's resignation? He committed physical adultery--and while speaking to a head
of state on the phone to boot. Not to mention the distraction of the lawsuit he had to defend.

3. I'd take 60 progressives just like him. Even with his social media blunders.

He's way to valuable to lose. In a week this will be forgotten for the new 'scandal' of the day.

6. That is either sarcasm or one of the most ignorant, sexist things I've heard recently.
Anything else your willing to offer your daughter for?

8. So you then think you have the right to offer your daughter?
The question stands, what else will you trade her for?

9. My point is that it passes the "what if it were your daughter test."
If I found out that my adult daughter were a willing, adult participant in these exchanges, I would still vote for Anthony Weiner.

16. Really? When your daughter turns 18, send me her picture...
I may want to "rent" her from you for a short while as well.

....you know, as long as you're offering her up to the public and all....

17. Why the outrage?
I disagree with his point, but the outrage over the post is unwarranted.

Why should we care who our ADULT child have sex with, even (especially?) if that "sex" is little more than pics and texts? We may not like their partner, but as long as it's between two consenting adults, what say do we have?

Why condemn the OP for being realistic?

11. This incident
is certainly regrettable. But C'MON! Before the days of instant everything, there were well-respected leaders in ALL levels of Govt. - INCLUDING the White House - that had dalliances more serious than Weiner's virtual fantasies.

You want Saints for reps? Fine - ferret them out and convince them to run. Lore has it that there WAS a perfect man on earth once. Sadly, the likes of Brietbart was around then too. The "britebart" critter had the perfect guy persecuted and executed at age 33. So what incentive can you offer potential candidates of today's world???

15. He trashed his brand as a Progressive Warrior
I personally don't give a rat's a*s about personal sexts. But (like Clinton) his lack of impulse control while the partisan wars and dirty tricks are in full sway -- puleeze. We Progressive have so few people in national office that have the courage and integrity to push a progressive line, fearlessly and charismatically.

But now: He looks like a fool and a teenage jerk. He empowered the Breitbart brand, he validated the opposition in at least ONE high-profile situation. Considering he's not a Committee head, doesn't have a large movement or funds behind him, he may be of limited Progressive value.

For me the litmus test is 'WHO COULD WIN HIS SEAT IF HE RESIGNED?' I don't want to see a reverse Hochul.

28. Vitter broke the law and he's still in office. Republicans close ranks around their
peeps, until they're about to be thrown out of Congress on their ears, like Ensign.

What's happened to the Party that closed ranks around Bubba, thanks to whom Bj's now have a place in school history books?
