Governor Says He'll File Legislation To Go Before SJC
M.R.F. Buckley, Staff Writer

POSTED: 11:08 am EDT April 15, 2004
UPDATED: 11:33 am EDT April 15, 2004

BOSTON -- Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney announced Thursday that he will file emergency legislation that will allow him to go before the state's Supreme Judicial Court to ask for a stay in its order legalizing gay marriage in the commonwealth.

Romney said the way the state law is written, the governor is not allowed to approach the courts and must ask the Legislature for permission to do so.

"I would like the right to be able to represent the people and my own office before the courts of Massachusetts on an important matter," said Romney.

The legislation would allow Romney to appoint a special counsel that could represent the governor's office before the court. He said he wants to appoint retired state Supreme Judicial Court Justice Joseph R. Nolan, who called the state SJC's ruling that found gay marriage legal an "abomination." Nolan served on the SJC from 1981 until retirement in 1995.

9. It really in unfair to lump...
...all of the Dems in the same basket. Think about what Newsom did. Think about how Pelosi came out in support of Newsom's decision. And that is just with gay marriage. I have a hell of a lot of respect for Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) for introducing the PPIA into Congress for the last ex amount of years, each year!

No matter where you go in life, you will always find rotten apples, but don't let them turn you off the few good ones.

3. If the majority of Democrats in the legislature pass this...
...they are more pathetic than I previously thought. They already approved a discriminatory amendment. Now Romney wants them to try to obstruct this ruling. I am hopeful that it won't work. I don't think the senate would pass this. I think a majority in the senate might actually be pro-marriage equality.

8. Because Massachusetts has cache, Utah doesn't...
Sorry, DU'ers from Utah, but Utah vs. Massachusetts? Utah has the mountains, we have the coast (we win); Utah has Salt Lake City, we have Boston (another MA win); Utah has a lake, we have the Atlantic (Again, we will take that one); Utah has a cult, we have the catholic church (almost a toss-up); Utah has a 12-foot tall marble Jesus statue that "talks", we have an archbishop that coddles pedophile priests (leaning Utah on that one)
Utah passed DOMA, we have LEGAL GAY MARRIAGE on MAY 17th.

Utah has Park City, we have Wachusett Mtn (advantage Utah); Utah has a Democratic mayor, we have a Democratic mayor (your guy speaks clear English and is very liberal, Utah wins); Utah had the Olympics, we had the Tall Ships (toss-up); Utah is a Red State, Massachusetts is a Blue State (we win)

11. Utah???
Why didn't he run for Governor in his homestate of utah instead of hijacking Massachusetts instead?

Romney's not from Utah. He's from Massachusetts, has lived there for years, ran for Kennedy's Senate seat in 1994. He went to Idaho to run the Olympics, but has been a Mass resident for a long time. I don't think he ever lived in Utah - his dad was governor of Michigan when he was young...

12. Am I the only one
who finds it amusing that a man with a polygamist in his family tree (great grandfather I believe) is railing about the preservation of marriage?

Ah Mitt...even Finneran doesn't want to help ya.

16. Maybe on banning gay marriage
but sounds like he won't help him stop the marriages from taking place:

From today's Globe :

House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran said yesterday he does not intend to stop gay couples from marrying in Massachusetts next month, leaving Governor Mitt Romney as the last Beacon Hill leader contemplating a legal strategy to block same-sex marriages.
