Justice Department to Join Muslim Scarf Suit

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (April 15) - A federal judge agreed to let the Justice Department join a lawsuit against a school district that suspended a Muslim girl for wearing a head scarf to school.

School officials suspended the 11-year-old twice in October for wearing a head scarf they said violated the district's dress code.

The code prohibits head coverings, including hats, which school officials said is based on federal education requirements aimed at halting gang-related activity.

The Justice Department asked to join the suit, accusing the school district of violating the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. The judge granted the request earlier this week.

Well, I'll be darned. The feds fighting for the rights of the individual- and a MUSLIM, at that?

Hell's freezing over.

It's as simple as that.

Around here, every once in a while there's a case where a wiccan child wears a pentacle to school and the school forbids it because either:
a. It's a possible gang symbol
b. It's a symbol of devil worship


Under a, well lots of things are potential gang symbols, including one's haircut, the colors on one's clothes and crying knights.

Under b, well, devil worship is legal and to prohibit any sign of it in a public school, yet allow kids to wear crosses is discrimination.

It makes it easy to target and spy on if they keep their religious garb. I really doubt the DOJ efforts are altruistic
