Apple store employee seeks to plant union seed

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An Apple Inc store employee has started a union in a rare move at a company known for its near-fanatical following and cutting-edge mystique.

Cory Moll, a part-time employee at an Apple store in San Francisco, is working to form a union to fight for better wages and benefits and to address what he says are unfair practices in the company's glass-and-steel retail showrooms.

"The core issues definitely involve compensation, pay, benefits," Moll said, adding that he decided to go public with the union to encourage other employees to come forward.

While unions are strong in industries like trucking and autos, they are largely unheard of in Silicon Valley companies, which pride themselves on being quick-footed and having the flexibility to hire and fire.

if they were strong they would be everywhere.

And some of them here in Australia are very strong. Just curious, but are you opposed to unions?

How foolishly selfish of the working class, to deny a company the opportunity to go all Bojangles on us . . .

I am only speaking to Apple in the U.S., not the issues with Apple in China

I'm quite happy with my work environment and know I have great working conditions, but I'm in the union because if it wasn't for the union, then those conditions would be slowly eroded away...

Too much pressure on employers to do bad things. We've got to keep them honest.

giving people I know are workers who make under $20/hr (there are of course, exception aplenty), whereas many wealthy I've run into (I live in an area where I see wealthy people whenever I go out) are cold hearted in their words and actions (again, there are exceptions, but the coldness nearly always comes from the wealthiest, and I've only had the police called on me for helping the homeless by a lady in an expensive "status" vehicle).

who fully supports this. Employees should have some say in what happens in their work world.

I am a long time Apple user and fan. I enjoy going to their stores when I am in need of something and I fully support their efforts to have a say in their pay, benefits & working conditions.

Even the bosses have unions...they call then Chambers and Associations, but they serve the same interests. Labor unions serve the public interest as well as the working people represented by them. Unionised industries are better managed and have less turnover. They are more productive. The higher the union membership, the more fair and prosperous the society.
The way things are now....with the war on unions and the corpocracy, how can anyone deny the value of unions. Smart and fair minded people cannot.

And they get paid better than most retail store employees.

Seems unlikely, but anyone who can unionize, should try.
