British teachers announce mass strike over pensions
Source: Euronews

Members of two major British teachers’ unions have voted in favour of a national strike over their pensions. Joined by a third public sector union, it means a quarter of a million civil servants will be involved in a mass walk-out on June 30.

Under government plans to cut the budget and reduce the UK’s deficit, teachers will have to work more years before they retire, pay more in pension contributions and receive lower pensions themselves. The retirement age will be 68, compared to the current 65. Some teachers could stand to lose tens, even hundreds of thousands of euros over the course of their retirement.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT), the country’s largest, announced that 92 percent voted in support of strike action. The turnout was 40 percent of eligible voting members.

The two unions represent about 300,000 teachers. Should the strike go ahead, it will be the first by teachers in more than 25 years.

3. Meanwhile, royal bum-kissing Tories waste £6B on the royal wedding & more on further staged pomp.

They also plan to end the Civil List and set back democracy 300 years by enriching the Royals immensely thusly. The Royals recently became exempt from Freedom of Information inquiries. They are now literally above the law and will soon become the wealthiest entity in the world while the British peasantry/subjects face a long period of hardscrabble existence. No more free education, no more generous heating subsidies for the elderly, diminished pensions for seniors and no more NHS as they once knew it.

Conservatives all over the globe are green with envy.

8. The cost you've quoted
was based on the creation of 2 additional public holidays.

No more free education ? Do please enlighten us.

Diminished pensions for seniors ? Do please enlighten us.

Its easy to get the NHS back to as it was . Shut down all immigration.

9. that is a kick ass union. I was there when they were on strike and I
was visiting a school in White Chapel. When the bells rang for recess, lunch, etc the teachers went to the lounge and waited it out. Everyone else had to take the kids, sometimes in mid sentence. It was amazing. Kick ass. GO, NUT!

7. The main issue here
is the ending of pensions based final salaries which are also index linked against inflation. Does the US have the same pensions for teachers at present ?
