(CNN) -- New York's state Assembly Wednesday night approved a same-sex marriage bill, sending it to the Senate, where it faces a closer vote.

2. Not yet it isn't. The Assembly has passed this several times before by huge margins.
The State Senate has always been the sticking point. Things LOOK good right now, but then, they looked good two years ago, too, and we lost.

5. Yes, but Republicans are beginning to waver on their opposition.

It seems they may be only one vote shy of what they need in the Senate to pass it, after McDonald changed his mind:

Gay marriage now just one vote shy of becoming law in New York despite Archbishop Dolan's objections

From McDonald (Repub.) this week:

You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn't black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing," McDonald, 64, told reporters.

"You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, f--- it, I don't care what you think. I'm trying to do the right thing.

"I'm tired of Republican-Democrat politics. They can take the job and shove it. I come from a blue-collar background. I'm trying to do the right thing, and that's where I'm going with this."

At least four of McDonald's fellow Republicans are considering voting for the bill, prompting widespread optimism that the Legislature is about to cross the threshold of history.

NY gay marriage gains support in GOP Senate

In New York, a second Republican senator announced he would vote for gay marriage as a matter of fairness. That would appear to provide a tie in the critical Senate vote, where a similar bill was defeated in 2009, a blow to the national movement. Several senators, however, still haven't committed to a vote, which could be forced by the end of the week.

"My vote is going to be for marriage," said Roy McDonald of Saratoga County, a conservative Republican in a mostly rural district who was a U.S. Army scout during the Vietnam War. "I think it's compassion, trying do the right thing, trying to get everyone to live together."

"Some people are going to get mad about it, sarcastic, mean-spirited," McDonald said. "Our big state is big enough for everybody."

When told McDonald would support gay marriage, Republican Sen. William Larkin of Orange County responded, "Shocking."

Fellow GOP Sens. Mark Grisanti of Erie County and Stephen Saland of Poughkeepsie said they were undecided on the issue

If enough people keep calling them, as they seem to be influenced by the calls, I think this time it could pass.

I think it will pass this time ~

6. Perhaps, but I'm going to remain cynical until it actually happens. I don't trust those fuckers.
The Senate Dems had private assurances from Republicans last time that they would support it, and went ahead with the vote, only to get clotheslined. I don't at all put it past the Reps to hold out the 32nd vote, or to simply refuse to hold a vote on it at all.

8. That's possible, but I think people would like them to just
get this done and stop wasting time. The writing is no the wall, it's going to happen anyhow, and they need to start doing something about jobs etc. before the next election. I'm sure there will be a lot of pressure on Republicans both ways. But with at least one of them deciding 'it's the right thing' and he doesn't care if he loses his job over it, maybe others will do the same.

However, I know it's best not to get too excited until it's actually done.

9. Being a vet of NY politics, I've been conditioned to assume the worst.
But here's hoping that inertia finally gets something accomplished in here.

4. Gay Marriage Bill Passes Assembly For Fourth Time
http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/140993/gay-marriage-bill-passes-assembly-for-fourth-time

As the State Assembly passed a gay marriage bill Wednesday night, State Senate Republicans say they will meet again tomorrow to decide whether or not to bring the measure to the floor before the legislative session ends.

The State Assembly passed the measure by an 80-63 vote tonight for the fourth time in two years.

“This is a matter of equity and justice,” Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said in a statement. “New Yorkers should have the right to marry whom they choose. Partners unable to enter into a civil marriage, and their children, lack basic legal protections taken for granted by married couples.”

(snip)
"Discussions are going to continue. The issue has not been resolved," said Skelos. "And I'll respect the decision of the conference once it's made, but the conference has asked me to keep the confidence of the conference at this point, which I intend to do. That's my responsibility as a leader. And we will continue to conference the issue tomorrow."

10. Well, this is a step that has been taken before..
Hopefully it won't need to be taken again.

Interesting when you think about it. California has long been considered the more progressive and liberal state, yet states like New York seem to be closer to granting human beings equal rights.

12. Called my Senator yesterday
And have been urging others to do the same. Roy McDonald will do the right thing this time, maybe an undecided will vote yes too if they get enough encouragement. One. more. vote. Let's make this happen. Make that call, write that email,
DO something!

15. I would, but my senator is a fuckstick and an unrepentant waste of oxygen.
He's a solid no vote.

13. Eventually this is going to be a nation wide thing and we'll all be better for it.
Why should us straights be the only ones miserable? Gays deserve the opportunity to get half their shit taken in a divorce too.
