NRC: No flood danger at reactor

FORT CALHOUN, Neb. — Despite the stunning sight of the Fort Calhoun nuclear reactor surrounded by water and the weeks of flooding that lie ahead, the plant is in a safe cold shutdown and can remain so indefinitely, the reactor's owners and federal regulators say.

“We think they've taken adequate steps to protect the plant and to assure continued safety,” Victor Dricks, spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said Thursday.

Tim Burke, vice president at Omaha Public Power District, said the plant's flood barriers are being built to a level that will protect against rain and the release of record amounts of water from upstream dams on the Missouri River.

“We don't see any concerns around the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station,” Burke said at a briefing in Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle's office.

2. My trust in the NRC is exactly 0%
Same with IAEA and frankly any government... including our own.

It very well may be that everything is fine... but I will never think that because they told me so.

The BP oil spill and Fukushima have been a tough awakening for me about what our own government and media is capable of. We will never be told anything that is not in a corporations best interests. Strange sicknesses and cancer clusters be damned.

5. Ft. Calhoun down for the foreseeable future...
and the North Omaha coal plant right next to the river, where will OPPD customer's get all of their electricity during the hot Summer months? Will it all come from Nebraska City? What if the railroad lines are flooded, and coal can't reach the plants?

Why doesn't Nebraska have more wind farms -- like Iowa does. Iowa is a much less windy state.

10. It's early days yet.
There's still plenty that can go wrong between now and
whenever the water recedes.

7. Well, THAT's certainly a relief..... the NRC says there's 'no flood danger at nuclear reactor'.
NRC: No flood danger at reactor, June 17, 2011

It doesn't take a tsunami...

...as this AP picture shows, with the Ft. Calhoun nuclear power plant in Nebraska now completely surrounded by water as levels continue to rise in the Missouri River.

Seems like the FAA did the same thing with the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Can't have people seeing the truth.

9. "safe cold shutdown" -- not!
Edited on Fri Jun-17-11 04:48 PM by guyton
Note the nice reassuring sound of "safe cold shutdown" ... vs. the minor details of having spent fuel rods onsite that need continuous cooling to avoid melting.

From the article:
On June 7, a fire occurred that caused an interruption of power to the spent fuel pool. As a result, the plant was unable to continue active cooling of that pool. According to OPPD, power was out 90 minutes.

And ...

Both the NRC and OPPD agree that the disruption of power was not a threat to public safety. Calculations indicate that the plant's spent fuel pool could have gone 83 hours without power before the water in it would have begun boiling, Dricks said.

So there's no pressing reason to panic, but if power was out for 90 minutes, I'm not very reassured that being out for 90 hours is unthinkable.

Heads should roll, this plant should shut down, and we shouldn't be in the nuke biz until there's someplace safe to store the waste ... like maybe the center of the Sun.

15. Well, if the plant floods, the rods will be under floodwater, right?
See, problem solved!

17. Here we go again. First comes denial and false reassurances
based on lies in the attempt to fool everyone, of course. Slowly though, we will be getting little leaks of information that things are a little worse than they first thought. After all, the need to defend nuclear energy trumps everything.
