5. Wow.
This is new. The one from this morning was the one from 10:30pm, last night that your article also mentions. With the "accidental" celebratory killing, that's 4 in 24 hours. sheesh.

Maybe you should put "(two killed)" in the subject line? It's so hard to keep these straight and it seems important that they are distinct.

6. a grim milestone is closing in....
249 American deaths so far in Iraq total...
113 since May 1st
136 before May 1st

23 more deaths and the number of Americans killed in Iraq (both combat and non-hostile) after Bush's end of major combat speech will be the same as those that were killed (both combat and non-hostile) before the speech. 24 more US dead and there will be more fatalities after his victory speech than the whole invasion and all of april.

15. yes.... here is why...
the pentagon has to tell the family some time... they can't wait too long... if they drug it out I suppose they could wait a month... i suppose longer if they looked into how often that particular soldier communicated with folks at home... anyway, first of all do you think the pentagon would risk having one of us or the like being the KIA's cousin or brother or close friend... someone who is on top of the casualty lists and casualty identification lists even when we are not expecting to see someone we know? Sure the pentagon could tell the family natural causes, pnuemonia, etc. but even those names the military releases.... they would not risk the PR disaster of a family member or associate of the KIA becoming suspicious when they never saw their loved one on the list and starting to research it and then starting to talk to the media. and then you have to realize that how many GI's: enlisted, Non-Com officers and Commmisioned Officers would have to be complicit in this cover-up... perhaps the administration would cover deaths if they could but especially now... when soldiers in iraq have cell phones, we have access to the newswires of the world via the internet... i don't see it happening... or at least i don't see the pentagon taking the risk.

17. I agree with your assessment
The Russians tried doing this in Afghanistan. Got away with it for quite a while too. Then the families realized what was going on and the stuff hit the fan. PC's were not real common in the USSR at that time either.

21. yes, but they are fudging
as I explain in another post, I am one of those who is paying close attention to casualty lists -- and I know that, frequently, in the last few weeks, I've had exactly the same number of names and the number of dead being announced by the news networks. That, of course, is impossible since there are people being killed nearly every day and you know it has to take them several days to make the name public. But I do agree that, eventually, we will hear if these wounded die. I'm just not so sure that, if that happens, they will be among the "combat casualties" which is another distinction they've become exceptionally fond of employing.

19. and about that 136 before....
I don't understand about that. I've kept a poster board of the names of the deceased since the war started for our weekly vigils. When the war ended, I had 139 names & that was the number they were giving. Then it shrank to 138, then 136. I don't understand that.

Incidentally, if anyone would like to have the names of the dead (broken up into pre- and post-May 1) on a flier, say to leave in the restroom at work or other place, you can download it from our website: http://StandUpForPeaceWyoming.org and then click on printable fliers & "americans dead in Iraq." We update it regularly. It is now in its 4th design in order to accommodate the growing list of names. It's a pdf file and designed to be printed as double-side on a sheet of paper. If anyone would like me to modify it, with information about your group's meetings, just let me know.

7. This is NOT a dupe, this is new LBN
There was an American killed by an RPG attack and that story was posted this morning in LBN.

This story is NOT a dupe, this is new LBN: Two dead Americans, plus their interpreter:

Today, two soldiers and their interpreter were killed between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. when a homemade bomb exploded under their convoy on the outskirts of Baghdad, striking two Humvees, said Pfc. Jose Belen, with the First Armored Division.

It was not clear whether the bomb was detonated on command or merely left in the road for the convoy to strike, Private Belen said. Some witnesses at the scene said a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at the convoy as well, he added.

A sniper then sprayed the Humvees with machine-gun fire, and one soldier was struck and wounded in the neck, Private Belen said. A group of soldiers with the First Armored Division who happened to be in the area pursued the attackers but did not find anyone, he added.

13. yeah that is based on that report that was posted here perhaps 48 hrs ago
AFP reported a '90 minute firefight' between a US convoy that had been ambushed in Fallajah... a witness said he saw 12 US soldiers lying motionless on the ground the US report of the incident later on (think it was embeded within a LBN article posted here) that there was only 3 US wounded in Fallajah in the incident.

18. Wyoming lost its 5th soldier on Wednesday
Leif Nott -- doesn't sound like a very Wyoming name but his family lives here now after retiring from a career in the military, apparently. I heard Jon Corzine say that NJ has lost 6 soldiers. I'm assuming we're still near the top, if not the top, of the number of deaths per resident. I know we were at the top when "major hostilities ended." Since then, we've lost 2 more. It's very, very sad. I can't imagine how scared those guys must be.

20. Think this is this story with the report of deaths added later by the NYT
Getting real hard to tell anymore though with all of the different attacks. Sounds like this liberating stuff is not as easy as we were led to believe before the invasion and occupation began? Don

22. These deaths no longer on NYT website front page
I'm not invite anti-NYT commentary. Just an observation that the deaths today were not on the website home page.

If they're not carrying the 1-, 2-, or 3-deaths a day story on their front page (at least on the website), then you can pretty much bet no other mainstream source is going to. Guess people aren't dying, then?

"U.S Goes Two Days With No Combat Deaths
2 hours, 21 minutes ago Add Top Stories - AP to My Yahoo!

By STEVEN R. HURST, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - For a second straight day, the U.S. military reported no fatal attacks Sunday on American soldiers in Iraq (news - web sites). In a series of raids, troops detained two dozen people they said were participating in the violent resistance to the U.S. occupation, including a "targeted leader."

The U.S. Central Command said Sunday's raids by the 3rd Armored Cavalry in the so-called "Sunni Triangle" west and north of the capital netted "24 regime loyalists, including a targeted leader." It provided no details on the identities of the captives.

An Iraqi contract worker for the U.N. Development Program suffered minor injuries when his car hit a land mine on the road from Baghdad International Airport to the city center.

The explosion, which set the car ablaze, came shortly after the driver passed a convoy of three U.S. Humvees traveling the same road, which has been the scene of many recent attacks on American soldiers.

The American occupation authority also reported settling 1,168 claims totaling $262,263 brought by Iraqis for deaths, injuries or property damage by American forces.

Representatives of the U.S. Judge Advocate General's office in the Iraqi capital said it had received more than 2,500 claims for compensation and had dealt with nearly 1,500, rejecting about 20 percent as having no foundation.

Violence against U.S. soldiers spiked after the July 22 raid in which Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s sons, Odai and Qusai, a bodyguard and a 14-year-old grandson were killed by American forces in a gun battle at a villa in Mosul, 240 miles north of Baghdad.

The three Saddam relatives were buried Saturday in a village just outside Saddam's hometown of Tikrit.

Since President Bush (news - web sites) declared an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1, 52 U.S. soldiers have been killed in guerrilla attacks, bringing combat deaths in the war to 167, 20 more than in the 1991 Gulf War (news - web sites). "
