1. Oh dear
I read the morning that the debris in the atmosphere from their volcanic eruption, which had blown west and fouled up Australia's flights a week ago, has now looped the earth and is fouling up Chile's own flights.

My thoughts go out to all affected by this, directly or indirectly.

4. A very thinly-populated area.
Mostly desert mining communities. Some shaking, but I'd expect little damage or injury from this quake.

5. correct, but this is going to have an effect on the active volcanoes
(or it's a reaction to the recent activity), either way, it is connected.

6. Yes. No doubt. Those volcanoes are driven
by the subduction zone just off the coast of Chile. There's certainly a relationship. Given the depth of this quake, I'm sure it means something regarding the volcanoes. We shall see.

8. Caused alarm, no emergency situations reported

According to Chilean National Emergency Office, depth was recorded at 125.8 kilometers.

Location is roughly 1,500 miles north of the erupting Puyehue volcano.

So far as is known, mostly what it did was to shift the sands and rocks of the barren Atacame Desert.

9. Too late to Edit: Article: Earthquake rattles northern Chile
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A 6.5-magnitude earthquake has rattled a sparsely populated area of northern Chile. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake's epicenter was located about 55 miles (90 kilometers) west of Calama in northern Chile.

The earthquake was felt most strongly in the northern cities including Iquique, Alto Hospicio and Pica.
