Deportee slashes his throat as plane prepares to leave Gatwick, UK
Source: The Guardian

An illegal immigrant slashed his throat as he was being deported from London on a plane.

The man is receiving treatment in hospital after the Virgin Atlantic flight from London Gatwick to Kingston, Jamaica, was postponed.

A UK Border Agency spokesman said an investigation was being launched into how the man was able to inflict the "superficial injuries" on himself.

The airline has offered counselling to passengers, who looked on in horror as the incident took place on Monday.

They were hardly "superficial injuries" if the Emergency Services had to prevent more serious injury by "glueing" his throat together. Heartless UKBA drones obviously don't care about the 'why?', either.

1. It's not really their job to offer counseling for people who try to kill themselves
their job is to guard the border.

2. "Heartless UKBA drones obviously don't care about the 'why?', either." I don't care either.
If the person was illegally in the UK, he should expect a ticket back to his native country. Nothing wrong with that.

Mentally well people don't cut their throats.

Obviously there is more going on here than meets the eye.

But while the UK Border Agency (UKBA) last night insisted his injuries were merely "superficial", one source said medics used superglue to hold the man's throat together before rushing him to hospital.

The UKBA's blatant downplaying of what happened looks like the usual "deny, deny, deny" CYA tactic to distance themselves from any responsibility, which is the norm for them...

9. We'll know soon when all the facts come out
But if he was being deported because of criminal insanity, this is NOT helping his appeal...

6. They were paying his way home
This asshole tried to stop his deportation, cost 449 passengers, 17 crewman, the Airline and the government tens of thousands of dollars all because this criminal didn't want to go home.

I have no sympathy.

7. How did the passengers and the crew lose money out of this?
Not sure where you get "the tens of thousands" estimate from, either. Why does everything have to be valued in dollars and cents, anyway? I'm sure the passengers who witnessed this extremely distressing and disturbing event weren't thinking about how much it was costing them financially. No doubt they will pay a psychological 'cost' over the long term, though.

"all because this criminal didn't want to go home"

Do you know the details of the 'crime' which led up to this incident? Do you think he cut his throat simply because he "didn't want to go home", or could there be a deeper rooted problem than what we can see on the surface?

Have you ever had any dealings with the UKBA? I have, and from personal experience I can tell you that they aren't exactly the most thorough, just or fair Agency the UK public has working for them. And that's putting it mildly.

How did the passengers and the crew lose money out of this?

The article was posted at Monday 20 June 2011 17.26 BST

The plane departed at 12.45 on 21 June following a passenger incident. That is a delay of at least 20 hours and probably more. The passengers lost a day out of their lives. It may be a day of vacation, a day of work following a vacation, a day of business for people traveling on business. They lost money on a hotel room they paid for and couldn’t use. They lost money on a connecting flight that they missed. They lost money on a cruise that they missed. They lost a days income for failing to go to work. They lost money because they didn’t make the sales presentation that they were traveling for.

In short. They lost money.

Not sure where you get "the tens of thousands" estimate from, either.

"All passengers on board the plane have been provided with hotel accommodation, refreshments and meals until the flight departs tomorrow. Any passengers who wish to change their flights will be able to do so."

Assuming two people to a room, that’s 225 rooms. At $100.00 per room that’s $22,500.00 for hotel rooms. At $35.00 a day per person for food that’s another $15,715.00 not including transportation to and from the airport, “counselling support to passengers and crew”, loss of the airplane for a day, expenses for the 17 crew members and I’m sure many other expenses.

Then there is the matter of the passengers at the other end of the flight. There were probably about as many passengers at the other end of the flight trying to get to or back to the UK or connecting to another destination. No plane, no flight. Somebody has to pay for their food and accommodations. One thing we can be sure of is that the asshole won’t be footing the bill.

I'm sure the passengers who witnessed this extremely distressing and disturbing event weren't thinking about how much it was costing them financially.

Maybe not at first, but when they found out that they weren’t taking off that day I bet you they did. This screwed up a lot of people.

Do you know the details of the 'crime' which led up to this incident?

I know that he was an illegal alien.

“An illegal immigrant slashed his throat as he was being deported from London on a plane.”

That’s enough for me. If he did something worse that just compounds it.

11. Sooner or later the statute of limitations runs out
I figure that 500 years is plenty of time.

One of the great jokes is that the Native Americans were peaceful people who were one with nature. Apparently when they illegally immigrated to the Americas the ecological damage done was immense. Ask the indigenous horses, camels, woolly mammoths and countless other mammals. Oh that's right. They're all extinct. Ask their fellow Native Americans that they attacked, enslaved, murdered, raped, stole from and pushed off of their land. The Europeans were just better at it.

PS: Notice that they are carrying guns.
