SALT LAKE CITY -- Some Utah voters don't trust electronic ballot machines and say they'd want a paper receipt if the state switches over from punch-card ballots.
"I don't believe in virtual reality voting," Larry Bergan told the state's Voting Equipment Selection Committee. "Our country is in deep trouble if people don't know if their votes are counted."

The change is part of the U.S. Help America Vote Act of 2002, which provides Utah with $28 million in federal funding for new voting machines. Congress acted after punch-card equipment proved so troublesome when Florida was counting its 2000 presidential election returns.
But some Utah voters say there's no good substitute for paper. About three dozen showed up for Thursday's hearing, out of 784,582 Utah residents who voted in the 2000 general election.
