Blasts heard in central Baghdad

BAGHDAD, April 17 (Reuters) - A series of blasts rang out across Baghdad on Saturday, and witnesses saw smoke rising from a central commercial district.

The U.S. military said it had no immediate information about the explosions.

Iraqi officer injured in convoy attack

A bomb apparently aimed at a US patrol has exploded in central Baghdad, injuring an Iraqi policeman.

According to Aljazeera's correspondent, witnesses said an explosive device hit a convoy of Land Cruisers in which Iraqi policemen or intelligence officers were driving. They subsequently opened fire in the area.

Witnesses told Reuters the bomb had been placed under a pile of bricks across the street from a pharmacy.

One dead in Iraqi mortar attack

A SUDANESE national was killed today when mortar rounds struck near two Baghdad hotels used by security guards employed by the US-led coalition and foreign journalists, a witness said.

"A round fell near a security checkpoint leading to the two hotels, killing a Sudanese guard of one the nearby buildings," witness Mohammed Abdel Karim said.

Another round exploded in the same sector, damaging a car and nearby homes.
