Foreign spy charges whip up top-level security storm
http://www.fpp.co.uk/BoD/Mossad/NZHerald160404.html

EXCLUSIVE - Two men believed by senior Government figures to be Israeli secret service agents have been arrested in Auckland trying to obtain a false New Zealand passport.

The case has set off alarm bells that Mossad spies may be masquerading as harmless New Zealand travellers abroad.

Prime Minister Helen Clark said last night she would not comment while the case was before the court, but confirmed the Government had raised the matter directly with the Israeli Government.

"There will be a strong and public response to this matter once the court action has concluded," she told the Weekend Herald.

Officials, lawyers, police and Helen Clark's spokesman refused to confirm or deny the Mossad link.

Hmmm...these Mossad really like to play around now, don't they?

1. We are a favourite of the spy set...
It wasn't that long ago that a Russian was caught doing the same thing (creating a false NZ identity in the hopes of getting a passport).

It seems we are trusted by all sides, and are not seen as a threat, thus being a "Kiwi" can be a door opener.

2. One more reason
...to dislike Israel. As if I needed one.

3. Kick - "Suspected Israeli spies detained"
Prime Minister Helen Clark yesterday said she had asked Israel to explain why two suspected Israeli spies had allegedly tried to obtain a New Zealand passport.

Urie Zoshe Kelman, 30, and Eli Cara, 50, appeared in Auckland District Court on Friday and denied several charges related to alleged attempts to obtain a New Zealand passport. Both men were freed on bail.

Two other alleged spies from Israel's Mossad foreign intelligence service were also being sought by New Zealand authorities, the court was told.

Police said Ze'ev William Barkan, 37, had fled the country while a fourth man is believed to be still in New Zealand, but the others had refused to identify him.

In Israel, an Israeli foreign ministry official speaking on the condition of anonymity said he could "confirm that several Israelis have been arrested on criminal charges. We're checking into it."

4. Standard Operating Procedure for the Mossad.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will on Sunday have to answer many questions on how and why he authorized the Mossad operation in Jordan, which turned out to be a major fiasco, not only with regard to the tense relations between the kingdom and Israel but also to the diplomatic ties between the Israel and Canada. When the Israeli cabinet meets on Sunday, Netanyahu may be asked officially by his coalition partners to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the ill-fated Mossad operation in Amman.

Senior security officers in Israel have called for a broad investigation into the aborted mission of the Mossad agents in Jordan who tried to assassinate, and some believe they wanted to kidnap, a Hamas official in Amman. Netanyahu is lucky, said an Israeli source, because of the extended Jewish New Year holidays that paralyzed political life in Israel as of Wednesday afternoon. Otherwise, the government would have already faced a major crisis right after the speedy clandestine release of Hamas spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, and his deportation to Jordan.

Israel has officially refused to comment on the covert Mossad operation in Amman, but the angry telephone call King Hussein made to Netanyahu Tuesday night had made it clear to the Israeli premier that he has not that wide a range of options and that he had to act swiftly to appease the Jordanian monarch. Reports in Israel spoke also of a secret visit by Jordan's Crown Prince Hassan last Sunday who brought with him a video tape with an on-camera confession by the two "Canadian tourists" that they were Mossad agents.

In what seems to be the tip of a major diplomatic iceberg, Canada called back its ambassador to Israel, David Burger, in a show of protest at the Mossad's forging Canadian passports for use by its own agents involved in covert activities. Canadian sources said this was not the first time Canadian passports, whether real or forged, were used by the Mossad. In his book "By Way of Deception" Victor Ostrovsky, a former Mossad agent, wrote on how Canadian passports were the favorite of the Mossad. He further wrote about a visit to a factory the Mossad was using for forging currency and passports. "When I visited the factory as a trainee, I saw a large batch of blank Canadian passports. They must have been stolen. It looked like an entire shipment. There were over 1,000 of them. I don't think the shipment was ever reported missing--not in the media, anyway," he wrote.
