GOP-Led Congress Increasingly Defies Bush
GOP-Led Congress Increasingly Defies Bush

By Janet Hook, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON -- A feisty Congress has left for a summer recess with a blunt reminder to President Bush: Republican control of the House and Senate does not give him carte blanche on Capitol Hill.

The GOP-controlled Congress has in recent weeks defied Bush on domestic policies ranging from drug imports to media deregulation to tax credits for the working poor.

Congress is also presenting new challenges to Bush in foreign affairs. Members of both parties have expressed qualms about postwar policy in Iraq. The No. 2 House GOP leader has questioned Bush's "road map" to peace in the Middle East. And the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee last week criticized the president's policy on Liberia.

To be sure, Republicans have stuck with Bush on major fiscal and foreign policy matters. But on a variety of fronts, Congress is showing more independence from Bush than at any point since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Now all we need is a big fat inquiry into his multiple crimes and betrayals.

1. Let the boy king keep up his antics and they may be willing
I think just a few more stupid things by the idiot son of an asshole and it will happen. He is outsourcing jobs to India even though the states are protesting this action. A plant in NC closed this week leving several thousand unemployed. It makes it real hard to go back to your district if you have unflinching support for this and not your people.

3. GOP & media criticism of W=hit me with a flower- do it every hour
Yeah baby their so vicious.

Paraphrased from a song.

Clinton would have faced an armed rebellion if he had signed the unconstitutional USA Patriot Act.

Or sent troops to fight and die based on lies and phonied up "evidence".

Get real!

Any serious criticism would include multiple calls for impeachment
and imprisonment of dubya.

The dictatorship is probably just orchestrating a show to fool US.

5. Yet another sign
that the GOP is all we need for democracy. They can provide spirited debate and discourse without us having to resort to a second party.

7. This article is spin
The GOP-controlled Congress has in recent weeks defied Bush on domestic policies ranging from drug imports to media deregulation to tax credits for the working poor.

Let's break this down.

Drug imports-The House has passed this bill, but the Senate will probably kill it (53 Senators have claimed opposition)
Media deregulation-Likely to pass, but they may be able to strip it in conference.
Tax credits-I wouldn't call "buried in conference" "defying Smirky".

In other words, the 108th Congress is still IMHO the "rubber-stamp Congress".

8. Not really spin
It is more like they aren't really analyzing the situation.

It does seem unlikely that drug reimportation will pass the senate but it did pass the House which shows that some people there are standing up to Bush. The republicans really didn't want it to pass there.

I don't think they can strip media deregulation out in conference. There is too much support for overturning the FCC that it wouldn't pass the senate without it. Also, Ted Stevens is very much for overturning the FCC and he will be one of the people running the conference.

I'm not really sure that the president is really trying to get the tax credits through. I think he probably does want it buried in conference even though it could be a good campaign issue for the democrats.

I would also add things like school vouchers in DC. Thanks to Arlen Specter they have been taken out of the DC Appropriations bill in the Senate despite Bush's support. Also the senate has tried to permit funding of foreign aid programs that include abortions. That would go right against the president's postion.

I think that the Republicans in Congress were used to having a ton of power for 6 years when Clinton was in the White House. The republicans were working out legislation and battling Clinton. Now, they are supposed to do whatever Bush says and they are getting a little sick of it. But, so far there hasn't really been any big rebellion.

9. There are moderate/liberal Republicans in the congress...
that allow the Repugs to keep their majority!!! They realize that they have alot of power and are now using it to steer the party away from the hard right. There are also some more conservative members who have stark idealogical differences with Bushco such as Ron Paul(TX-14).
