Tea party debt plan takes center stage
Source: AP

By ANDREW TAYLOR

WASHINGTON (AP) - The next step in the weeks-long saga over how to increase the government's borrowing cap is to let House tea party forces try it their way.

A Republican "cut, cap and balance" plan set for a House vote Tuesday would condition a $2.4 trillion increase in the so-called debt limit on an immediate $100 billion-plus cut from next year's budget and adoption by Congress of a constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget.

"Let's let the American people decide," said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on "Fox News Sunday.""Do they want something common sense as cutting spending, capping the growth in government and requiring a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution?"

The idea appears to be to allow tea party-backed GOP lawmakers to have the run of Congress this week in hopes that they'll ultimately be able to stomach a plan emerging in the Senate to give President Barack Obama sweeping power to order a $2.5 trillion increase in the debt limit without approval by Congress.

Well, such an amendment for balanced budgets is working GREAT in CA. Just look and see for yourself what a great idea it is.

Y'know, sometimes, things work out differently than they sound when implemented in the real world.

Besides, this is more GOP BS theatre. It not only won't work (like all their other ill thought out ideas) but it won't pass.

Edited on Mon Jul-18-11 08:46 PM by enki23
because anyone with even a basic grasp of economics, and who isn't currently being paid to "think" otherwise, realizes that there are times when deficit spending is fucking necessary.

by the way, here's a trivia question. to which nation does the united states owe a significant majority of its national debt?
answer: the united states.

20. Its A Corporate Media Lie - The Balanced Budget Amendment...
Edited on Mon Jul-18-11 09:42 PM by TomCADem
...does not balance the budget.

First, it requires taxes to only be pass with a 2/3 majority, which makes it harder to balance the budget.

Second, it creates an exception for the military, which allows Congress to easily exceed the debt limit for military spending.

So, the effect is to constitutionally require the eviceration of Medicare and Social Security.

8. I think
I my be wrong but I think for a constitutional amendment you need 3/4 vote in the house and a 3/4 vote in the Senate and than it needs to be voted on and approved by 3/4 of the states

9. Amendments
Article. V.

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

12. something just tells me that they dont understand what an Amendment requires
its not something that they can just vote on(which we all know). Wondering how soon they think it would pass ratification of all 50 states...3 years? Wow that sure would help.

Here in Colorado, we have TABOR (google it). It limits the budget to no more than like 3% of the previous year. So one might say oh whats so bad about that? Well, coming out of a depression like this, the budget cannot grow at the same rate as the economy. It sucks.

15. It may 'pass,' but it will never be ratified.
An amendment requires 2/3 of both houses plus 3/4 of the states to adopt. In other words, this is mere face saving for the 'baggers' because it would never be ratified and, therefore, would never become law.
