Hacking: Brooks To Face MPs Despite Arrest
Source: Sky News

Rebekah Brooks will appear before an MPs' hearing into the phone-hacking scandal on Tuesday despite her arrest, her spokesman has said.

Following her detention on Sunday, it had not been certain whether she would go to the Commons Culture Select Committee due to active criminal proceedings.

But the ex-News Of The World (NOTW) editor will now be quizzed alongside her former boss News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch and his son James over the hacking scandal centred around the paper.

However, it is still unclear to what extent former News International (NI) chief executive Mrs Brooks will be able to answer MPs' questions because of the ongoing police investigation.

1. In the US, one would be thinking about an immunity deal
for such an appearance. Is that sort of trade a common thing in Britain?

2. unclear ?
It was felt here yesterday she would now inevitably be accompanied by a solicitor who would decide which Q's and A's would conflict with a current ongoing police inquiry. The Law here is above Parliament here so his decisions couldn't really be questioned. So - maybe expect constant chatter between Mrs Brooks and her solicitor as questions arise.

Best simply watch the BBC News blog on the proceedings tomorrow.

3. Really hoping the BBC will stream at least some of the hearing live on its site.
It will be interesting to see if Brooks, with solicitor at her side, makes any attempt to answer questions. Will she be protecting herself or acting as human shield for the Murdochs. And what of James Murdoch, not under arrest, but possibly-soon-to-be? Will he bring along a legal advisor? Will Rupert actually show up? if so, will MPs long bullied by him take advantage of the chance to rip Papa Murdoch to shreds?

Talk about must-see TV! :bounce:

6. BBC can't stream to the US
There is no agreement for them to do so. When you go into what you may believe to be our home site you don't - trust me on that. I tried when I was in OH late 2009 and realised it subverts over to the world site. I suppose they might provide a delayed link onto their World Service.

Mrs Brooks solicitor won't allow her to answer questions which could predjudice an ongoing police enquiry - would be illegal for her to do so. Over here law takes precedent over parliament.

I agree it will be must see tv. :)

:hi:

10. Not that one, no. Though I was able to watch much of the debate in Parliament
last week on the BBC site. Here's hoping they decide it suits them to stream tomorrow's goings on. :)

5. If I am not mistaken it seems to me...
the police are still doing Murdoch favors? I may be cynical but I do not see this hacking scandal being much more than a nuisance for Murdoch...Folks here on DU talking about it being the end of FOX "News" are more or less dreaming about something that will never happen...Murdoch has far too much control for this to get him into much trouble here in the US.

In would LOVE to hear how wrong I am...If I am.

9. Differences in perception across the Atlantic.
Fox News is a meaningless subject over here in the UK. Its bundled into Sky Satellite news packages but I've never come across anyone who watches it.

Any court cases on this subject in the US would probably go on for years anyway.

16. I understand what you said about FOX "News" but...
I meant to express two different topics...One for you & others who post here on DU & you to let me know if you think the police in the UK are still doing Murdoch favors? Just curious...And thanks for the reply sorry for the confusion.

4. Ironic that her lawyer is whining about the damage the arrest will do to
Edited on Mon Jul-18-11 08:32 AM by beac
Brooks "reputation." A woman who made a career out of ruining other people's lives and reputations? Some nerve.

edited for typo
