White House calls Boehner plan a 'political act'

The Obama administration is calling House Speaker John Boehner's debt proposal a "political act," just hours before the chamber is set to vote on, and likely pass, the Republican legislation.

White House press secretary Jay Carney insisted Thursday that the proposal would not bring the issue any closer to compromise.

Republicans are seeking deep spending cuts in exchange for raising the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit. The White House has threatened to veto the House GOP bill even if it makes it through the Senate, where it faces unanimous opposition among the chamber's Democrats.

"As soon as the House completes its vote tonight, the Senate will move to take up that bill. It will be defeated," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid vowed on Thursday afternoon.
