Soldier Arrested Near Fort Hood; FBI Finds Bomb Materials
Source: WSJ

KILLEEN, Texas—An absentee Muslim soldier was arrested and bomb-making materials were found in his motel room near Fort Hood, the same Texas Army post where 13 people were killed in a 2009 shooting rampage blamed on an Army psychiatrist, an FBI spokesman said Thursday.

Killeen police arrested 21-year-old Pfc. Naser Abdo Wednesday after being alerted by "concerned citizens," and agents found firearms and "items that could be identified as bomb-making components, including gunpowder," in his motel room, said FBI spokesman Erik Vasys.

Mr. Vasys said the FBI planned to charge Pfc. Abdo with possessing bomb-making components later Thursday, at which time he would be transferred into federal custody. He said there was nothing to indicate Pfc. Abdo was "working with others."

Pfc. Abdo has been absent without leave from Fort Campbell, in Kentucky, since early July.

"I would emphasize that any threat that Abdo posed is now over," Mr. Vasys said. "Suffice it to say we're looking into all aspects of Mr. Abdo's life to determine his motivations and intentions."

2. Note that 'concerned citizens ' brought this to the attention of authorities.
So much for the trillions spent on HS!

4. Not that I'd mind this twit frying if guilty...
but I really hate that phrase "that could be identified as bomb-making materials". Most homeowners have things that could be classified as such. Between normal maintenance items like sections of pipe, PVC, etc and the chemical soup that lives under most people's kitchen sinks, there is enough to charge you. In my case, I reload my own ammo so I even have gunpowder.

5. He had 18 lbs of sugar, 6 lbs of gunpowder and a pressure cooker.
When he bought the gunpowder, the salesman said he didn't know what smokeless gunpowder was or why he wanted it.

That is pretty far removed from someone trying to make the case that you have bomb making tools by virtue of the pvc pipes in your bathroom.

7. Oh I'm not arguing that point at all, this POS needs to be compost. I just
am saying that the particular phrase used applies to millions of actually innocent people with no intent to do anyone any harm. Kind of like saying I must be engaged in a woodworking enterprise because I have trees on my land.

8. Pressure cooker and sugar?
Was he planning on canning some yams?

'Cause I love canned Yams.

I am very leery of "evidence" that is completely legal to own, that only looks "suspicious" in combination.

The FBI could break down anyones door, look under the sink, and in your pantry and find "bomb making" materials. Who doesn't own at least 5 pounds of sugar and a pressure cooker?

They could even find guns, shells and gun powder in a lot of houses here in SE Ohio.

Hell, some farmers around here have dynamite, fertilizer and diesel fuel, so they could be charged with having weapons of mass destruction.

9. He had all of the materials in his motel room...
located by the main gates to the Fort.

A little more suspicious than just having the items in one's home, isn't it?

12. No.
But then I don't deal with suspicion. If I am on a jury I want facts only, not supposition.

... Army private Naser Jason Abdo, who gave several television interviews last year saying he was opposed to deployment in Afghanistan, became the target of suspicion after a gun shop owner noticed his unusual purchases of weapons and tipped off police.

Police tracked down the 21-year-old to a motel near Fort Hood and arrested him on Wednesday afternoon, police said on Thursday. A Texas native, Abdo served at Fort Campbell in Kentucky but had deserted since July 4. He had gone AWOL since early this month after being charged with possessing child pornography..."

So, until yesterday this guy was "An American Hero" who as an "Exalted American Warfighter" was beyond criticism - and now ...?

There are few heroes: Simply putting a uniform on someone does not a hero make - a fact forgotten in modern America.
