Osama's right hand man al-Zawahri warns US of "real battle" ahead
03 August 2003 1218 hrs (SST) 0418 hrs (GMT)

Osama bin Laden's right hand man Ayman al-Zawahri has warned the US that the real battle has not started yet.

The threat was contained in an audio tape, attributed to the top Al Qaeda official, and broadcast by Dubai based Al-Arabiya television.

He also warned America that it will pay a dear price if any Muslim detainees in Guantanamo Bay are harmed.

The Al-Arabiya station identified the voice as al-Zawahri's but gave no details.

1. Well,
I feel our detention of people in Guarntanamo without following the rules of the Geneva Convention has already harmed us seriously in the eyes of the world. And I shudder when I think of how this opens up the possibility of unlawful, cruel detention of US citizens sometime in the future.

2. I posted this because
I don't believe Hussein posed an imminent threat to the U.S., but all we hear on the news is Saddam this and that - they hardly ever mention Osama, as if that was an old story. What has now been described as the most credible threat we've received from Bin Laden's group, is brushed aside. On the same day, they announced cut-backs in air marshals. And the color alert was not raised - possibly because there is a series of things that states must do if the alert goes up, and they cannot afford it, they're broke.

More media griping from Kate: There's endless TV news focus on getting Hussein and not much about Osama. Afghanistan is costing us $1 billion a month, not much compared to $4 billion+ in Iraq, but still important.

This "Get Saddam" stuff is only slightly less annoying than the "Road to Iraq" a few months ago. It's not that it isn't important, but it's being treated as a smoke screen.

5. Terrorism 101
What king of a terrorist would give a warning first before a strike? Duh! This make no sense to me or is it just my perception?

9. Exactly. "Al Qaeda" does not believe like typical "terrorsists"
Historically, terrorists have always used the element of surprise, and they have always claimed responsibility (or "taken credit" from their perspective) for their actions.

9-11-01, if we are to assume was actually an act of foreign terrorism, was certainly the mother of all surprises, but nobody ever released a statement saying "We proudly hail our victorious strike against the Great Satan America" or any words to that effect.

Compare this to the typical terror attacks in the Middle East. Usually you get half a dozen groups all trying to take credit for the same attack and you have to figure out who the true perpetrators are.

"Al Qaeda" hasn't claimed responsibility for any of the attacks attributed to them. Seems to be a major violation of the terrorist handbook.

6. Bob Graham has been screaming about this issue
the US is very vulnerable - worse now because we have used up much of our resources on Iraq and our military is spread too thin now.

Also, the Saudi and Paki funding of Al Queda and other terrorist organizations must still be going on. Where is the outrage!!

It's essential that we have this information publicized. Any member of Congress who wants to keep the 28 pages from the American public should be tried on treason, along with the bushistas.
