House set to reject Reid debt plan as endgame nears
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) -- The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is set to reject Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling Saturday -- partisan payback for the Democratic-controlled Senate's rejection of Speaker John Boehner's plan Friday night.

The twin votes are a likely prelude to a long weekend of furious back room negotiations between congressional leaders looking for a way to end a tense political standoff and avoid a potentially catastrophic federal default next week.

The Senate voted 59-41 to table Boehner's measure -- effectively killing it -- almost immediately after the plan was approved by the House in a sharply polarized 218-210 vote. No Democrats supported the measure; 22 of the House's 240 Republicans also opposed it.

GOP leaders in the House were forced to delay the vote on Boehner's bill by a day while the speaker rounded up support from wary tea party conservatives. Boehner's deal with conservatives -- adding a provision requiring congressional approval of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution in order to raise the debt limit next year -- was blasted by Democrats, who called it a political non-starter.

3. Good to see the Congress acting like school children.
Both sides blew it. God forbid they actually, you know, do something together instead of acting like little snot-nosed kids.

9. And the Senate votes to kill the House bill right when it came over to them.
How is that not being childish. I'm not sure how you can't possibly see that both sides are acting like idiots but, believe me, they are.

6. No, one side "blew it" and acts like "snot-nosed kids".
Except that kids don't lie nearly as much as the Republicans. Nor would they try to play suicide bomber with the economy. And of course, they have much more common sense.

Have a nice stay.

4. Bastards
This is wrong. They have no right to do this to the American people. A default will really hurt real people. All of this to pander to 100 crazy people. Last I checked, there were about 435 members of Congress who were NOT Tea Party fiends, and a President and Vice President not Tea Party fiends as well. What about the will of the people.

7. If only we were paying this much attention to global warming.
This theatrical display is disgusting. Complete and utter wasting of time. Meanwhile, there are a few extremely important things going on that are being all but ignored.

I'm sick of this bullshit. Not all Americans are 'baggin idiots.

11. Maybe They Can Implore Somebody
to twist John Boner's arm to get him to vote for it, once it arrives in the lower house. But beware of physical contact, lest ones' clothes become besmirched with agent orange.

12. EXECUTIVE ORDER the debt ceiling already, Mr. President!
Edited on Sat Jul-30-11 02:35 PM by alp227
Bombard the White House and Congress telephone lines this weekend if you can. Realistically there will either be a trashy bill, a default, or executive order on the ceiling.
