Body found at NH dam is that of missing 11-year-old

STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. — Authorities say the body of an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl who disappeared nearly a week ago has been found in a river less than half a mile from her home.

Divers found Celina Cass’s body Monday morning near a hydroelectric dam that spans the Connecticut River between her hometown of Stewartstown, N.H., and Canaan, Vt.

Prosecutor Jane Young confirmed the identity at a news conference Monday night.

The discovery followed nearly a week of intense searching that attracted more than 100 federal, state and local law enforcement officers to the town of 800 residents a mile from the Canadian border.

Cass was last seen alive in her home on July 25. Young says her death is considered suspicious. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday.

3. such a small town...just around 1000 people
it won't take them long to find out what happened. From the article, it sounds like they're taking a look at the step father...served in Desert Storm, discharged for schizophrenia ..and apparently an episode a few years ago with a girlfriend, that got him committed, and he was just committed again on Monday. I hope for everyone, including him, that he didn't have anything to do with it.

I live in a town the same size as this one. Usually, it's a family member.

live in a similar sized town down-state. I share your hope that her step-dad had nothing to do with it.

It's heartbreaking.

10. I understand what you're saying, but it's paraphrased
from the article. I'm not trying to insult him, nor anyone else with mental illness. I'm currently dealing with mental illness and my Mother. My point was that I hope it wasn't him.

24. The stepfather has been confirmed to be violent
n 2003, Noyes was involuntarily committed to New Hampshire Hospital in Concord after he entered his girlfriend's house in the middle of the night and threatened to throw her down stairs, according to court documents. An order signed by a probate judge indicated Noyes suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and believed corrections officials implanted a transmitter in his body to keep track of him.

A court motion filed by his attorney at the time indicated Noyes served in Operation Desert Shield before receiving a medical discharge from the Air Force because of schizophrenia. The attorney didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

the NH asst ATTY GEN who is heading up the investigation at this moment.

I am sorry I cannot remember the exact words, but it was something like "the physical evidence and her location in the river leads us to continue this investigation of her death as 'suspicious'"

7. Oh, NO!
I hate , hate, hate this.

Have a 3 year old granddaughter --- WHEN can parents EVER let a child out of sight for even a brief time to just "play" with friends? It now is all structured and programmed activities.

So lucky to have raised a kid in a neighborhood filled with other kids and caring and in touch parents and a two nearby fields to build tree houses and explore nature with very mild monitoring-- and all SAFE and same to adulthood.

Those days seem to be gone forever, sadly.

26. I hate it too.
Raising kids now is scary. Our kids no doubt felt that we stifled them, but we have tried to know where they were at all times until just recently. 18 years old now and headed to college --- time to let them loose a little. It is something like this poor girl's abduction/murder that forced us to be smothery parents. I'm so sad for her family and for the cruelly snuffed out potential that was Celina.

16. the odds of finding her after this much time were slim
That they found her body is evidence of the excellent, organized, precise and systematic tactics used by the overhead team, and the ground pounders. Closure for her family is extremely important.

23. Now looking at home as crime scene
An autopsy is being conducted on Celina Cass. Results are expected sometime this afternoon.

The New Hampshire attorney general's office says this is being handled as a criminal investigation right now. Authorities say Celina Cass' death is very suspicious based on some general observations they were able to make when the body was pulled from the water yesterday.

There has been no activity at Celina's home today because no one is allowed to stay there right now because it's considered a crime scene

28. Pickup taken from home of dead NH girl, 11
http://bangordailynews.com/2011/08/03/news/nation/pickup-taken-from-home-of-dead-nh-girl-11/

STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. — Investigators probing the death of an 11-year-old northern New Hampshire girl hauled away a silver pickup truck from outside her home Wednesday.

Neighbors said the vehicle typically is driven by the girl’s stepfather. While the pickup was on a flatbed outside the house, technicians could be seen examining its undercarriage.

Investigators said Wednesday that they didn’t expect to make any announcements on the progress of their investigation into the death of Celina Cass, whose body was found Monday in the Connecticut River, almost a week after she disappeared.

New Hampshire Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young wouldn’t comment Wednesday on the investigation.
