Arizona Democrat Gabrielle Giffords, victim of a shooting by a deranged gunman in Tucson, has returned to the House floor to cast a crucial vote in favor of the debt ceiling compromise.

Aside from the pleasure of seeing Rep. Giffords return to her duties at all, it is a a pleasure to see her choose this opportunity to do so. A better symbol for the moderate Democrat could hardly be conceived of.

The entire House has been giving her a well-deserved standing ovation.

13. Was watching C-Span when she appeared on the floor and....
all of a sudden, before the vote was finished, the crowd on the floor broke out in applause.

It was strange, only in that it took a minute before the C-Span announcer told us why the applause was happening before the end of the vote and before the magic 216 number had been reached.

What a woman. I'm sitting here with tears.

Out of curiosity, how long did she have before they replaced her? Is there a limit, or just when/if her term ran out without her returning?

Kind if took the air out of the Bill's balloon!

"Sometimes the most positive thing we can write is negative to you..." and negative to many other posters also, compelling me to believe that quite possibly, it was indeed no more than negativity; as sometimes the most positive thing we may write is simply not positive at all.

31. That is false equivalency - this deal is not the end all to be all.
And yes, I would've used the 14th amendment. Barack Obama has undone the work of Eisenhower, who increased the number of folks eligible for social security. Obama will be remembered as the democrat who cut our safety net. Nice legacy.

32. not happy at all about what happened today
but the symbolism of Giffords' return is rich. The message to the Tea Party is "You can try shooting America in the head all you want, and sure, you'll do lasting, permanent damage, but you will not stop us, you will not bow us to your reactionary will, and we will leave you in the slagheap of history."

Who siphoned off enough votes to stick us with deficit-boy for 8 years. That's the sole reason we are in this current mess, and they just won't own up to being complicit in this whole mess, so they overcompensate by screaming and pouting like a bunch of obnoxious children who just threw a rock through the neighbors window.

here is a politician that really tries to work for ALL of her constituents, has suffered a life-threatening injury, and has shown up to do what she was elected to do. that is NOT selling her soul, no matter how one feels about the deal that has been done. she is voting with her party

but never receive: a truly heroic act of courage and determination. While we do not agree on every political issue, I cannot help but admire the model of courage and dedication she sets. I am proud she is a Democrat.

Congratulations, Representative Giffords.

49. So true...
She could have stayed at home and not taken a stand and no one would have thought about it. She did not make a grand speech with catchy phrases. She literally almost died serving her country...and she did watch others die as they tried to support her. Regardless as to whether or not I disagree with her vote, I admire her fortitude and courage. I get sick of big mouth reps and senators who posture for the camera to get us riled up, and then become rich on the backs of the American public. Who knows how these people snicker behind our backs as they cut deals, benefit from insider knowledge and then pretend to feel our pain.

It was good to see her back in action. The alternative could have been much worse for her.

63. Biden on meeting with Giffords...and more
Biden on meeting with Giffords...and more
08/01/2011 9:17 PM
By Matt Viser, Globe Staff

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joe Biden spent much of his day on Capitol Hill, listening to disgruntled Democrats who were queasy about the debt deal that the White House signed off on.

But he ended the day with a beaming smile, inviting an amputee to his house tomorrow for breakfast, and ruminating with reporters about an emotional moment that just occurred on the House floor: Representative Gabrielle Giffords returning to the chamber for the first time since she was shot in the head during a town hall meeting.

“That’s why I’m here,” Biden said. “Nancy was kind enough to call me.” (that’s Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader).

He then launched into several stories as secret service officers looked on, reporters crowded around, and lawmakers walked past.

“When I went up, she said, ‘Joe,” Biden recalled of his meeting with Giffords. “I said, ‘Now we’re both members of the Cracked Head Club.’ You know, I had two craniotomies. For real. They literally took the top of my head off. Twice. Now, the wags in Delaware, when the second operation occurred, wrote and said, ‘Well, it’s because they couldn’t find a brain the first time!’”
