@Reuters: FLASH: U.S. stock index futures open sharply lower after S&P credit downgrade

US STOCKS SNAPSHOT-Futures open down 2 pct after S&P downgrade

Sun Aug 7, 2011 6:06pm EDT

NEW YORK, Aug 7 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures opened sharply lower on Sunday in the first trading for domestic equities after Standard & Poor's cut the country's AAA credit rating.

Futures for all three major indexes sank more than 2.5 percent.

The cut in the U.S.'s long-term credit rating by a notch to AA-plus was unprecedented and resulted from concerns about the nation's budget deficits and climbing debt burden. While the move didn't come as a complete shock, it is likely to eventually raise borrowing costs for the American government,
companies and consumers.

S&P 500 futures SPc1 fell 32.8 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures DJc1 slumped 287 points and Nasdaq 100 futures NDc1 lost 57 points.

10. What happened in Tel Aviv today?
Analysts over the weekend were talking about how, of all the economies on the globe, theirs is the most tied to ours.

26. Sorry for taking so long to respond, Ruby. I am/was under the belief that these will be...
...extended as they were extended a while ago. Israel still has money left on their account which they can borrow based on US credit (which is the first reason I'm thinking this) and I believe the administration was threatening not to extend them this year (which was the second reason).

I was looking for something greater than -750 That was the DOW drop of the first trading day after Sept 11, 2001. So this means that the Tea Party is only one third as bad an enemy of the US as Al Qaeda.

Obama has pretty much emasculated them. Perhaps he would now be so kind as to turn his attention to the GOP.

SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures were trading sharply lower in Asian trading hours on Monday after rating agency Standard & Poor's lowered its rating on U.S. debt to AA+ from AAA late Friday. In addition, Europe is continuing to struggle to contain its sovereign debt woes and said over the weekend it will actively implement its bond-buying program in an effort to calm markets. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were down 248 points at 11,156, Nasdaq 100 futures fell 42.25 points to 2,144.75 while S&P 500 futures dropped 25.90 points to 1,171.90. Oil futures fell $2.41 to $84.47 a barrel in Nymex electronic trading while investors sought the safety of gold, pushing futures in the precious metal up $35.40 at $1,687.30 an ounce.
