NM Senate Candidates Lining Up For Bingaman Seat
Economy Tops Voters' Concerns In 2012 Election
POSTED: 7:17 pm MDT August 7, 2011
UPDATED: 8:09 pm MDT August 7, 2011

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico's primary is 10 months off; but debate on President Barack Obama's economic policies already started on television and radio ads financed by the national Republican and Democratic parties.

The economy appeared to be topping voters' concerns in the 2012 general election. New Mexico's campaigns for the Senate primaries promised to be long and bruising -- this in a Western state considered a key to next year's presidential election.

Strong candidates from both parties said they are raising money and setting up campaigns for the June primaries and the chance to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman.

The high-profile race will help drive the ballot, which means the outcome determines not only the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, but also which presidential candidate takes New Mexico's five electoral votes.

1. It might be a close race, but....
so far Rep. heinrich has a lead over the GOP candidates. Heather Wilson is probably the only Republican candidate with a shot to win the seat since she is far more moderate than the national party, but if a more conservative candidate wins the nomination, Heinrich will win comfortably.

3. Good to know Heinrich has a lead so far, but Wilson scares me.She's vile, but very smart and slick
And I have no doubt she'll pander to the right as much as she thinks it necessary in order to win. Heinrich is not anything great himself, but light years better than any repub. Same scenario when Udall won. We got lucky that Steve Pearce narrowly defeated Heather in the primary; she would have been a much more formidable opponent, although Tom might have beaten her anyway. Pearce made it a slam dunk. Hopefully the same thing will happen now, although NM voters are really schizophrenic. They'll swing wildly from a sold liberal to a right winger and back again ,and sometimes simultaneously. Both Bingaman and Domenici won their elections with consistently overwhelming margins, and we've swung back and forth from solid liberals to libertarians to tea baggers for governor. Back to Heather being smart and slick. I attended one of her televised debates with Romero in her next to last (?) congressional race, and had I gone in there uninformed and undecided, I probably would have come out of it ready to vote for her. She said all the "right" things and came off as more moderate than she is. But again, while she isn't a raving right wing loony, she is conservative, and she'll stick her finger in the wind (already is) to see which way the wind is blowing and go that way. She would be horrible to have as senator , but they've been grooming her for that for years. I hope to God it doesn't finally happen.

2. BS. More like media and other folks working hard to create a self-fulfilling prophesy. Again.

Republican Senator Brown's election as Republican Senator from Massachusetts did not mean Democratic Governor Patrick's re-election was doomed.

I hope a Democratic wins, but each race and each candidate is different.

4. True
But how different the Governor's race might have looked if they had happened at the same time
That also goes vice-verse, would the senate race have looked different

5. Non-story news "story" of the day.
Talk about yer shitty journalism.

No names of potential candidates in the story, no analysis of issues or geographic trends, no numbers of dollars raised, no actual INFORMATION at all. Sheeeeesh.

Just speculation and buzzwords to get Google hits, I guess.

disgustedly,
Bright

7. I'll be working my butt off...
to defeat what will most likely be Heather Wilson in the Senate race, and I'll be working for whoever is going up against my repulsive rep, Steve Pearce.
