Republican leaders blast Obama's visit to Michigan
Source: Detroit Free Press

While the city of Holland prepared for President Barack Obama’s visit to Johnson Controls and a message of job creation from investment in advanced technology, national and state Republican leaders unloaded on the president.

“The state has lost 50,000 jobs since President Obama took office and that’s only getting worse, not better,” said Bobby Schostak, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party.

And national party chairman Reince Preibus characterized the visit to Johnson Controls, which is adding 150 jobs in Wisconsin and Michigan to produce advanced batteries, as merely a campaign visit.

White House officials, in a conference call with reporters Wednesday, said the visit was meant to highlight the jobs that are being created because of federal investment in advanced technology. That technology will help automakers reach tough new fuel efficiency standards – 55 miles per gallon by 2025.

Obama is expected to speak at the Holland factory at 2:30 p.m.

1. Let me see how this works. Texas increases it's jobs and Rick Perry
Gets all the credit and Michigan loses jobs and Obama gets the blame.

4. So you agree with the Republicans then? DU'er bitch a lot about Obama and the "bully pulpit"
Now that he is taking the message out to Michigan are people gonna bitch about that.

As to the Republicans, they are pretty much throwing shit up against the wall to see what sticks.

5. It really depends on what he says...and how he uses the bully pulpit.
If he gives a plan, or an outline for a jobs plan, I'm all for it. If he is going there for a photo op, then screw it. Say something that isn't about a distant future and how we should all get along.

Here's the result of Gov. Snyder's economic policies

"Venture capital investment in Michigan companies during the first six months of 2011 plunged to its lowest level in 16 years, according to new data released today by the National Venture Capital Association."

10. Once again Obama is getting a lot of unnecessary blame for jobs.
Blaming the president for job loss is like blaming the commissioner of MLB when your team loses. We really need to start shifting the blame toward the uber-rich, outsourcing, etc.

19. Pick any 3 year period...
of W's administration and show me how many jobs were created in Michigan during that period. I would waqer that many more than 50,000 were lost. How about during his entire eight year reign of idiocy?

23. I'm glad to hear that Obama is going to a staunchly Republican state
and talking about jobs and job development.

More power to Obama on this one. We need a lot more of these visits and a lot more publicity about them when they occur.

Obama is showing that he cares about jobs. The Republicans have never shown that they really care about jobs.

25. I do not mean to Pi_s off Michangers
But it seems that there is a lot of hate for Obama there, when the one concrete thing he did was keep GM alive. I do not understand.

26. Um, it's politically tone deaf for Obama to campaign in Michigan on his jobs record
Edited on Thu Aug-11-11 06:01 PM by Romulox
If you don't understand that, I doubt I can explain it any better.

"when the one concrete thing he did was keep GM alive."

He forced GM into Bankruptcy, breaking union contracts. That was after he gave Wall Street TRILLIONS, no strings attached.

27. Understood, but
The fact there is a GM is because he took a risk, and frankly got nailed for it from both left and right. There were many who would have praised him for letting GM die, not just on the right, but the far left that frankly hated GM and hated cars.

28. Right. But NOBODY in Michigan would've praised Obama for letting GM die.
And Michigan would be unwinnable for the President under those facts. So that point is moot.

The question is, did he do ENOUGH, especially when compared to the largesse he heaped on New York and Wall Street. That's where the comparison becomes unflattering. Add to all of this the overall unemployment picture in Michigan and Obama's lack of any coherent jobs plan going into the forth year of his administration, and the comparison becomes flat out embarrassing.

30. Is he winnable anyway
It does seem like he is damned for helping, and damned for not helping, and if he did not heap money on wall street to keep it from dying (and taking us with it) he would be hated too.
