Pipe bomb explodes near Tucson assisted living facility

Tucson police are investigating a pipe bomb explosion that sent a piece of shrapnel
through the bedroom window of a midtown assisted living facility, police said.

A 911 caller told police they heard an explosion Wednesday morning near the 5300 block
of East First Street, Sgt. Matt Ronstadt, a Tucson Police Department spokesman, said Thursday.

Police responded to the scene and found pieces of debris and shrapnel near the assisted
living facility and in the roadway near the 5300 block of East Second Street, near
Speedway and Craycroft Road, Ronstadt said in a news release.

Officers eventually found the location of the blast near the doorway of
a business in the 5300 block of East Speedway.
