West Coast fish to be tested for Fukushima radiation
Source: CBC News

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency plans to start testing fish off the coast of British Columbia for the presence of radiation stemming from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan earlier this year.

The agency has not yet released any specific details on the testing program, but did say it expects the test results to be well below Health Canada's actionable levels for radiation.

Fisheries activist Alexandra Morton with the Raincoast Research Society says she supports the testing, but calls the announcement a political move. Morton says millions of sockeye have started returning to the Fraser River and the fishing season is already well underway.

Salmon are a particular concern to Morton and others because their wide-ranging migration patterns can take them right across the Pacific Ocean to the coast of Japan.

1. Norman Goldman said he had links on his site about the radiation
on the WA and OR (maybe CA) coasts, but I was honestly afraid to look.

I hope the Canadian results make it to the news here and we wake the fuck up.

2. Notice how it's Canada- not the US? Now look at this salmon migration chart:

You'd think the US government could kick a few dollars down to do this too...but they're not. They're not because they don't care. I'm pretty sure at least a dozen people eat salmon in the US...maybe the government should start caring?

3. That's because they've already determined that there's no radiation, hence no risk...
...therefore radiation tests aren't required....:eyes:

17. Great link- USA is definately kicking in money...
to the nuclear power lobby. It should be noted that as nuclear reactors were exploding in Japan, Obama's energy dept. issued words of condolences and support to the nuclear industry here. Normally you wait until the dead are buried. But, I guess Obama felt it was important to reach out to the real victims of this disaster.

8. ditto
don't want to touch it any more.

Once upon a time .. like only a couple of hundred years ago ... you could drink the water, swim in it, breathe clean air, consume the bounty of the sea. It really is sad.

7. It's pretty weird that they say they expect readings of a certain level before testing has started.
It doesn't inspire confidence in their research.

10. That means in a few months there'll be an article saying the readings were "much higher than
anticipated. No one could have known."

It's like right out of the playbook now.

9. No more seafood for me and mine
I, frankly would NOT trust our govt testing results anyway-Any good corporatist lawmaker will certaily affirm that right?
State and Federal Corporatist lawmakers who control the funding find protecting profits more important than public health safety.

16. Tested, then fed to us.
I imagine the SS Van DeCamp is harbored nearby ready to set sail down the coast.
If nothing else, they'll sell it to our cats.
