Brokaw to sign off on December 1
http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/04/19/brokaw.reut/index.html

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Tom Brokaw, the face of "NBC Nightly News" since 1983, will retire December 1, the network said Monday.

The next evening, Brian Williams, who was named as Brokaw's successor in May 2002, is expected to take over as anchor and managing editor of the show. Williams joined NBC News in 1993.

Brian Williams, replacement? oh boy.

1. Bleh
My main memory of Brian Williams was during the millennium celebration, when showing fireworks over D.C., Williams was blathering on and on and on about how Monica was going to overshadow President Clinton's presidency. I couldn't believe it. What an asshole.

18. But, he was right
Williams was blathering on and on and on about how Monica was going to overshadow President Clinton's presidency

Well, frankly, Williams was right. She did.

If Bill had kept it in his pants -- or told the truth immediately, rather than allow the slow slow drip of scandal -- or if Al Gore had repudiated him -- or maybe even if Bill had just refrained from the obscene East Lawn victory party following the Senate's vote against impeachment -- we wouldn't have President Vacation and Grand Inquisitor Ashcroft in office.

19. it also would have helped
if the republicans had not spent 8 years and 70 million dollars witch-hunting Clinton.

2. The nice thing about not watching TV is you get to choose
for yourself who to get your propaganda from.

3. Another reason to watch Nightline more often.
Koppel is the best, IMHO.

6. I'm lucky if I make it home before 7 pm each night.
I have to wait around for Nightline. I like their focus indepth on one particular topic instead of the cursory glance that the typical cable news shows give everything.

Sorry, but Brokaw's affected voice is like fingernails on a blackboard to me.

9. My favorite Brokaw quote
"I also believe strongly that the Internet works best when there are gatekeepers. When there are people making determinations and judgments about what information is relevant and factual and useful. Otherwise, it's like going to the rainforest and just seeing a green maze."

Good riddance is right.

10. NBC family no more
My family has been an NBC Nightly News family for half a century. My part of that goes by the wayside on Dec. 1. I WILL NOT watch Brian Williams -- that smug, sanctimonious, egomaniacal, editorializing son of a bitch. Yuck. What a stupid mistake for NBC to make. ANYONE would be better than Williams.

It's Rather or Jennings for me from now on.

11. He retires in disgrace- just another media whore
He's another media figure that I once (naively) respected. Then came Selection 2000 and its aftermath. Brokaw chose his side. Does he wear a flag pin? I haven't seen him since I stopped watching NBC in December of 2000...

13. Can't wait for Abercrombie Williams, complete with fake tan!
Yuck. I'd forgotten that they'd already named Williams as heir apparent to the Brokaw throne. When last I saw Brian Williams, he was a not-so-embedded, blow-dried reporter-soldier, cruising through the Iraqi dessert on a free lift from the Cav. He was decked out in super-clean desert-camo BDU's, freshly shipped from the J. Peterman catalog. He also sported an auspicious white ring around his eyes, the clear sign of a recent tanning-bed visit.

I'll just keep watching Peter Jennings. :-)

20. Begone, bedpan changer!
Your years of wiping the establishment's ass have been amply rewarded, Brokaw-the-bedpan-changer.

May the fumes of your lies braid your senescence.
