Flood worries rise with water in New England

NEW YORK (AP) — The remnants of Irene have turned rivers and creeks into raging torrents in parts of upstate New York and New England.

Authorities in Vermont's capital, Montpelier, warned residents to be ready to evacuate late Sunday as the Winooski River rose.

Parts of downtown Brattleboro and Bennington, Vt., were submerged. Authorities banned the sale of alcohol in New Paltz, N.Y., in an effort to keep spectators away from the dangerous Wallkill River.

Irene took a more westerly path than forecast, putting landlocked Vermont in its path. Homes flooded and culverts and roads washed out statewide.

Montpellier might have to be evacuated to preserve the DAM. They MIGHT have to FLOOD the capital of Montpelier to save it.

Perhaps the IT WAS HYPE (tm) will die with this.

(Yes howie, yes Piers, yes you know you... am looking at you)

ON THE EDIT: I have never seen that. The previous story the link changed to a DIFFERENT story. So this is a slightly older story. Keep an eye on this.

2. Time to get rid of hydro power.
These things are often placed where their designers must know that there will someday be flooding. Many many thousands of people have died over decades of using this dangerous and unnecessary technology. It just can't be managed safely but some corporation somewhere needs to turn a profit.

And the fish don't like it.

It's time for it to go.

:sarcasm:

10. Yeah...
So your point is... random sarchasm?

Is this directed against people that had legitimate concerns about fukashima and nuclear energy? Or is this directed at the nuclear industry itself and a mocking reaction of the nuclea industry towards hydro power.

I know that you are trying to be cute, but either make a solid analogy or don't.

16. No developers develop. And people buy cheap properties.
There will of course be that part of the city which has always been on the riverbank, but a lot of development since the dam was built will have hugged the water and enroached onto historical floodplains.

Everyone forgets about or dismisses the THREAT of dam upstream, because 99 years out of 100 it is successfully managed for flood control, but they do remember the dry years there wasn't enough water to go around. Recent climactic instability only encourages the dam operators maintain their resevoirs close to full whenever they can.

An unseasonal and/or extreme event like Irene overwhealms the valley AND the dam and suddenly whole neighbourhoods are under threat.

8. I would say mold
:-)

They are stubborn. Use some good quality vodka!

Now that was weird, the story disappeared so using an older story, per CNN they are evacuating already.
