AMMAN, Jordan -- King Abdullah II postponed a meeting scheduled with President Bush in Washington because of questions about U.S. commitment to the peace process, according to palace statement late Monday.

The meeting, which had been set for Wednesday, was postponed until the first week of May, "until discussions and deliberations are concluded with officials in the American administration to clarify the American position on the peace process and the final situation in the Palestinian territories, especially in light of the latest statements by officials in the American administration," the statement issued in Amman said.

1. Maybe he is too busy with the Jordanian elections?
Oh, thats right, they don't ever have elections in Jordan or this thug in a suit wouldn't be the leader of a boy scout troop.

2. The heads of the Arab nations have moved their meeting
ahead to the end of April. They called this meeting to discuss their united response to the Palestinian issue. I can understand why Amman cannot talk to Bush until after the Arab meeting.

4. Israel's Sharon meets with Jordan's king
~snip~

King Abdullah flew by helicopter Thursday to Sharon's ranch in southern Israel, where he held a three-hour lunch meeting with the prime minister, according to Israeli media reports. The leaders discussed Sharon's disengagement proposal, which would include dismantling nearly all Israeli settlements in Gaza and some in the West Bank.

Jordan is concerned about any changes in the West Bank's status that could push Palestinians into the desert kingdom and upset its delicate demographic balance; half the residents of Jordan are Palestinians.

During his meeting with Abdullah, Sharon promised the king that Israel would continue to guard the border crossings with Jordan, the Yediot Ahronot daily said. Sharon also assured the king that Israel would do everything to ensure the integrity of Jordan, it said.

5. Forget something?
"Meanwhile in the Gaza Strip, troops in armored vehicles raided a Palestinian village in search of Hamas militants, part of a new offensive in the strip. Twelve Palestinians were wounded in gun battles, including two boys, ages 12 and 15, who were in critical condition."

7. So WHY does he meet with Sharon and blow-off Bush? I think
Because Sharon, whether you agree with him or not, is an intelligent man who understands the situation, has power, and makes his own decisions based on an informed analysis of the situation. Bush, on the other hand, is an idiot, an international joke, who clearly understands little about the Middle East and who has no real influence with Sharon. King Abdullah feels that the situation is critical requiring intense diplomacy, and the King doesn't have time for a Bush photo op.

9. exactly
it could hurt the King in the short term, but he's concerned about the long term aspects of the peace and it's effect on his country. Not a photo op of the King of Jordan vs the boy King.

Nazi's loses the argument. If the king of Jordan didn't think it was in his country's best interest to meet with Sharon, he wouldn't have. It's just that simple. Perhaps he understands the realities of the situation better than you.

10. It was probably a wise move, and I
commend King Abdullah. Considering the problems with Hamas and Israel, not to mention Dante's Inferno in Iraq, it's probably a good idea to let things settle down a bit before talking.

Plus, he might want to see what happens with the "Coalition". It should be interesting to watch how many countries follow in Spain's footsteps.

Besides, who would want to talk to Bush? Any excuse is a good one.

11. From all I've Read About the King...
he seems to be an intelligent and educated man. He and his wife Queen Rania(who is of Palestinian descent) seem dedicated to improving the lives of Jordanians and continuing along the path of economic and social reforms started by his father King Hussein. I remember reading that President Clinton considered Hussein a personal friend and was devastated upon the King's death.

Interesting to constrast the former and current President when it comes to world leaders, particularly those who could help the situation in the Middle East. No wonder the King doesn't want to talk to W.

about Clinton...snip...

In New York on Monday, former President Clinton expressed qualified support for the Sharon plan. "Do I think this Gaza proposal is a good thing?" he asked at a panel discussion sponsored by Tel Aviv University at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan. "I certainly do, but I think it has to be part of a larger strategy to re-engage."

He also said: "Israel has successfully eliminated the second Hamas leader in a short period of time and does not wish to deal with the P.L.O. Well, who are they going to deal with?"

The Clinton administration viewed settlements as obstacles to peace and final borders as negotiable only between the Israelis and the Palestinians. He alluded to those differences only vaguely by discussing the plan as a good first step and by pointing out that "it's no good for Israel to make a deal with the U.S. because we don't live there."

16. If I remember rightly
possibly the last occasion the King of Jordan had a photo-op with bush* on the White House lawn, bush* decided to air one of his ignorant frat-boy remarks about Islam on mainsream television with the King standing right next to him. I think I posted at the time here what an insult this must have been.

If I was King Abdullah I wouldn't be seen dead in public with the moran.

19. i listened to about 45 minutes of his talk at the Commonwealth Club on NPR
this afternoon and he sounds well-educated, thoughtful, and committed to the peace process, and he brought up the roadmap many, many times. i'm sure he must be faced with enormous pressures because of president idjit, who is now making decisions with the most reptilian part of his brain, knowing he has a real fight on his hands against Killer Kerry.

21. King Abdullah II has class
"The snub from King Abdullah II is the most recent expression of Arab anger at Bush for endorsing an Israeli proposal to withdraw unilaterally from all of the Gaza Strip but from only parts of the West Bank. That would leave Jewish settlements on some West Bank land claimed by the Palestinians."

junior thinks he can go around the world playing God?

As the other poster noted there, is trouble on all
sides, and much of it aggravated by US actions.
