Bachmann's Irene comments just a joke: spokeswoman
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 11:48 AM by louis-t
Source: Reuters

The Minnesota congresswoman, who has gained media prominence for her fiery attacks on Democratic President Barack Obama, said in Florida that Irene was an act of God to get politicians' attention to the debt and deficit problem.

"Of course she was saying it in jest," Alice Stewart, spokeswoman for Bachmann's campaign, told Reuters.

Now they'll make an excuse every time she says something stupid. Funny how repugs all turn into comedians around election time.

sorry, dupe.

If it actually was just a "joke", it was a pretty distasteful one.

that all the flooding in Vermont is because God hates universal healthcare, because you know floods are almost as funny as hurricanes. Is it possible that may not actually be able to control what comes out of her mouth?

7. CNN is showing a follow-up with her actually joking, but her first comments were NOT a joke.
This is what she said, according to press reports:

"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?' Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we've got to rein in the spending."

This is classic serious Bachmann. God is on my side. Join me.

CNN's video shows her laughingly saying something similar, but not the same words.
This may have been a follow-up attempt to defuse her original comment? Way to go CNN....

18. IIt's not something to joke about IMO
I doubt that people who were made homeless, or worse, lost relatives in the hurricane, think that it's funny.

But it sounds more like a child being told off for lying or verbal bullying, and making the lame excuse, 'I was only joking'.

22. Horse-pucky!! Look at that statement (The quote at the link)....
In the context, it's a concrete statement of fact. There's no humor there. If there were, one could pick up some double-meaning or play on words, gallows humor etc. There's no alternate level of meaning there.

Did you ever notice that children's humor/jokes are obvious and concrete? It's only with maturity that we learn to appreciate levels within levels of something like 'The Far Side'.

I've noticed that RWers tend not to have much of a sense of humor. Nor an understanding of metaphor (thus their literal reading of the bible). It's about higher cognitive ability. :P

Apparently picking and choosing what commandments we need to follow and messages to see or not, would be a great demonstration of her qualifications for President.

24. What's so funny is that it isn't funny.
Usually when these spokesmen claim that the candidate's comments were a joke, there's no punch line. I feel like going into Joe Pesci mode and asking her: "Funny how?" "Is the fucking hurricane funny to you?" "Is God a motherfucking clown that amuses you?" She wasn't joking, she was scamming her supporters by pretending to know God's motive first hand. In this case, God takes on the role of national book keeper, like he's up there crunching the numbers and said "Whoa! I gotta get hold of Michelle Bachmann."

This is what happens when posers claim to hear God's voice. They can interpret it anyway they want. I personally believe the hurricane was a message to the Atlantic City casinos that took $1500 off me a few years ago. If they send my money back, I'll ask God to stop future "warnings". This is absolutely real. I'm not joking, give it back. Now. ...Please?

40. No less a media pundit than Dick Gregory, host of the vaunted Meet the Press, said this
on the also-vaunted Today Show the day after---wait for it--she won the Iowa Ames Straw Poll, which is about as meaningless a measure as there is..

After all, ALMOST all of the ballots she had bought herself at $30 a pop were cast for her. And a grand total of 17,000 votes were cast. So, that was very significant in a country with a population of something like 310 million, right?

33. so, it's God if it hits somewhere where the religious zealots
don't like-what is it when numerous tornados hit the bible belt or hurricanes hit mississippi and alabama or drought hits Texas? I mean if it hits NO, then god did it; but it also hit in other areas.

Too irrational for words.

34. "Not meant to be a factual statement" -- Senator Jon Kyl (R-Asshat)
The Republican all-purpose excuse.

The other one is when a Republican says the bald-face lie, "No terrorist attacks occurred during President Bush's watch." When called on their lie, they say, "Of course, everyone knows I excluded 9-11," or "I was speaking of 'after 9-11'." Which is another lie, but that's a different subject.
