Nervous Romney Decides to Show at Tea Party Event After All
Source: The Atlantic

Mitt Romney has reversed his decision last week to skip a Tea Party-ish forum hosted by conservative Sen. Jim DeMint. The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin reports that Romney will show up at the South Carolina event after all, and his staff says the move was due to a scheduling problem. And the campaign denies the change is a reaction to Rick Perry's movement to the top of national polls.

Last week, The Washington Post's Nia-Malika Henderson reported that Romney would skip the event -- and that it would be seen as a "snub." Tea Party favorite DeMint endorsed Romney in 2008, "but has yet to give him anything other than tepid support more recently," Henderson wrote, even as Romney signed DeMint's "Cut, Cap, and Balance" pledge to lower the debt.

FreedomWorks spokeswoman Jacqueline Bodnar complained to The Daily Caller's Alex Pappas Monday, "To my knowledge, Mitt Romney has never requested to participate in one of our tea party events or rallies." Tea Party Patriots national coordinator Mark Meckler said he'd never seen Romney at Tea Party rallies either.

Romney has been criticized by Republicans for having a strategy that plays it too safe instead of engaging Perry, the Republican 2012 candidate with the most Tea Party support right now. This shows he might be rethinking that strategy, The Hill's Cameron Joseph writes. Romney's reversal on DeMint's forum "indicates that his strategy has shifted from a front-runner's plan of picking and choosing events and staying above the fray to a more confrontational one, where he will meet Perry toe-to-toe," Joseph says. The Washington Post's Aaron Blake agrees: "So, all in one day, Romney hits "career politicians" and announces he will attend Tea Party Express and DeMint events. Perry effect." So does The Wall Street Journal's Jonathan Weisman: "Looks like Gov. Romney has decided now is the time to engage!"

ROFL! Romney blames his initial refusal to attend on a calendaring mistake. What? No one on his campaign knows how to use Outlook? What is sad is that Republicans find that denying the existence of climate change, evolution, and insisting that Bush is responsible for the death Bin Ladin and the outster of Quaddafi is a winning strategy.

Then again, the more outrageous the comments made by Republicans, the more likely that the American people will blame Democrats, because the American people have been conditioned to blame Democrats and Give Republicans a free pass.

So, after trying to run as a Wall Street Republican, Romney feels the need to try to out crazy Perry and Bachmann.

1. As Romney's nose slips below the fray...
His clean low profile campaign is less than treading water since a Texan walked out bragging about what a devout Christian he is... unlike that mysterious Mormon. Be afraid.

Hahahaha

Nothing like second place to rethink the crazy side of the base.

2. Who does the Rethug leadership prefer -- him or Perry?

I don't see why they would back Romney unless they have a sure-fire plan to get the public to overlook the fact that he's a Mormon.

4. Mitts wants to be Prez so much, he just may answer an altar call at a mega church.
When TV cameras are rolling, of course

6. Romney must enjoy public humiliation.
He'll be exposed as the phony he is. I'd give him some credit if he'd defend his record and past positions that made him a relative moderate in today's Republican Party, but they ain't gonna happen. Mitt's going to find out just how despised he is with the Teapublican Party primary voter.

8. I wonder if he is really a moderate?
Edited on Wed Aug-31-11 04:12 AM by No Elephants
Economically, he is about as moderate as Gordon Gekko, from the movie Wall Street. Not a moderate at all.

Religion--not a moderate at all. Equated the missionary stint his sons served for the Mormon Church with military or public service. That's as messed up as anything. However, he can't talk about his religion much because it hurts him with RW Republicans.

Other issues. He pretended to be liberal to moderate when he ran against Ted Kennedy and when he ran for Governor of what some consider the most liberal state in the U.S. However, after Dim Son got elected, he began going back on every single moderate position, starting (to my best recollection, anyway) with a ban on adoption by gay people. And, can we forget his 2008 "varmint" attempt to endear himself to the NRA, after someone confronted him with a prior inconsistent statement re: hunting?

So, which is the real Romney?

First and foremost, the guy who has, all his adult life, wanted to be President so badly that he will say and do anything he thinks will help him get elected. no matter how much he has to lie.

What does he really believe? Well, since he lies so much, that's anyone's guess, but we do know that he is a lifelong, money loving Republican and a devout Mormon.

Devout Mormons believe most of the same thing about social and political issues as other RW religious extremists, except that their religious beliefs seem a little stranger to most of us because we are less familiar with them.

Bottom line. I don't think he's a moderate at all, not on any issue.

12. Yeah....I have to agree with your assessment.
Politically, he's different from the rest of the field, but moderate is probably not the right choice of words - more like a political chameleon. If you watch the 93 Senatorial debate that's on Youtube of Romney vs. Ted Kennedy, you'll be awestruck as to how Mitt tried to place himself to the left of Ted...in the end, the man stands for nothing. Which should make him a perfect candidate to lead the GOP.

7. poor Mitt he tries so hard to sound like a raving lunatic - but his heart is just not in it
It must really give him a feeling of dejection when he looks so out of place at a Republican Party "who can sound the looniest" throw-down.
