Iowa District Pays $300K Over Strip Searches
Source: KCRG

ATLANTIC, Iowa (AP) - The Atlantic school district has agreed to pay $300,000 to settle a lawsuit filed over student strip searches.

Settlement documents released by the district show the families of three girls will each get $100,000. Other details of the settlement were confidential.

The families' lawsuit had said the girls were strip-searched in a locker room in August 2009 after a classmate reported the theft of $100 from her purse. No money was found. The lawsuit claimed the girls' state and federal rights against unreasonable searches had been violated, as was an Iowa law that specifically prohibits strip-searching students.

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like requiring the principal and members of the school board to register as sex offenders was part of the settlement.

1. When public servants abuse their authority, taxpayers pay the bill

4. Yes. I vacillate between faulting taxpayers for being too passive and
saying the system is too rigged against them.

Maybe taxpayers should occupy this school and the public areas outside the homes of these perps until they slink away?

3. A quote from another source

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20111001/NEWS01/310010040/Atlantic-will-pay-300-000-to-settle-strip-search-suits

"Atlantic High School officials investigated the incident and a 13-page report concluded that no action be taken against any of the school officials involved." They tried to whitewash it are still trying to hide the details.

The female counselor for some reason was let out of the proceedings. The assistant principal left for another job. He was part of the settlement agreeement, but the division of the payout was not revealed.

The student who claimed the money was stolen was the daughter of a teacher at the school (based upon another unverified source).

I talked to my daughters and told them that under no circumstances should they ever submit to something like this. They should demand to be immediately allowed to contact their parents or to call the police.

Sure makes Homeschooling look better and better.

5. NO, not the police. Her parents or a lawyer. Give your daughter the phone number of the local ACLU

or that of your family attorney, if you have one.

If someone suspects or accuses you of a crime, you NEVER talk to the police without a lawyer, no matter how innocent you are. ESPECIALLY if you are innocent.

"You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you."

Courts developed Miranda warnings for VERY good reasons. Teach your kids not to throw away those Constitutional rights.

6. I view what they are proposing to do (a strip search) as a crime
They are restraining the children and forcing them to a strip search in violation of state law. Like I said parents first, but you are right probably the police would be the wrong choice.

9. Money isn't the answer. Removing the responsible parties from power over others is the answer.
Sounds like an utter fail. The district, taxpayers, and hence students, get screwed out of a bunch of money, all the other students know the money went to these three families, and the people whose inappropriate behavior caused the problem are still in power, with a legal judgement in their hands saying that they did nothing wrong - and therefore can do it again.

Sex offender status would have been an appropriate response, given existing laws.

13. Not just for the staff at the school, but the entire school board as well....
I seem to recall that a number of them were riding around on high horses about how they were going to ignore state law and do this sort of crap.
