Paint protest disrupts NAU jobs fair
Source: Arizona Daily Sun {Flagstaff}

A man walked into an NAU (Northern Arizona University) jobs fair at around
1 p.m. on Thursday and threw what appeared to be a cup of red paint at a
Peabody Energy Corporation display booth, according to witnesses.

Shortly after that, another man walked in and released balloons that read
things like "murderers," the witness said.

One of the men jumped on a bike and rode away, the other changed clothes
and took off running south.

It's possible a third suspect was filming the incident, according to
NAU spokesperson Tom Bauer.

1. My God we are still protesting Peabody. Good for them. I didn't
even know it still existed. When I was helping with protests out in Montana on the reservations they were our target. Coal and mountain top mining.

2. This is not civil disobedience, this is terrorism
The person manning the booth is in no way directly related to any grievance these thugs may have with Peabody.

3. I did not read the article except to look who it was about. I was just
amazed that it was a company that I had picketed and wrote articles about back in the 70s.

4. Terrorism? Are you serious?
Edited on Fri Oct-07-11 01:29 PM by Xithras
Are you really going to lower the bar so far than now even non-violent resistance against attempts to recruit new employees to a company guilty of horrific environmental destruction is "terrorism"? They didn't cause any injuries, and they didn't cause any damage other than making a small mess.

They got some paint on the booth. Time to get out the Predators!

6. They didn't cause any violence and they did not cause any injuries - Not
I do not think the person manning the booth celebrated the diversity of opinion represented by having red paint thrown at them. More than anything, they were traumatized.

And they did not cause any damage, other than the damage. These individuals should be found, arrested, and pay for the damanges that they caused to both the University property and the property of Peabody.

These people not only work for a company that bases it's entire existence on environmental destruction, but were out promoting and recruiting for it. As the public face of a company that has been the focus of environmental protests and opposition for at least a half-century, they should expect to meet with opposition wherever they go. If they were "traumatized" by a little red paint, they need to find a new line of work.

You'll also note that the article doesn't say anything about any of the people getting hit. They threw the paint at the booth. It was non-violent civil disobedience against a major corporate polluter and environmental criminal organization. Speaking as a person who used to stick nails in trees* to discourage logging back when I was in college, I'd call this form of paint-flinging protest pretty damned mellow.

(*yes, I know, but I was young, idealistic, and pretty damned stupid once upon a time...flinging paint would have been a much better idea.)

8. Got It. The Peobody people were legitimate miltary targets
Compassion for your fellow human beings is secondary to getting a message across using violence.

That is why it is ok to spike trees against loggers or burn fur factories down. This is only "a little civil disobedience" against the oppressors in the Peabody HR department.

9. You seem to be the only one talking about harming people.
Edited on Fri Oct-07-11 03:20 PM by Xithras
We're not talking about arson, or even assault here. They threw some paint on a booth. It's no worse than spray painting a protest message on the front of their corporate offices. It makes a mess, and it's disruptive, but ultimately harmless.

Your concept of "violence" is a bit disturbing. Violence implies destruction or injury. Arson is violent. Assault is violent. Flinging paint and vandalizing trees? Not so much.

violence denotes emotional and physical injury. Arson is violent. Assault is violent. And the legal definition of assault is flinging paint at someone.

13. Yep.
"And the legal definition of assault is flinging paint at someone."

They flung paint at a booth. Nowhere does it say that the booth was occupied, or that it was flung near people. If they wanted to hit the employees, I'm sure they would have...and 100% sure that the MSM would have mentioned it.

Don't confuse people with inanimate things.

18. Actually, that is the definition of Battery
If the thugs hit someone, that would have been Assault and Battery.

However, Assault is defined as an intentional act by one person that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent harmful or offensive contact. Touching is not required.

19. "an intentional act by one person that creates an apprehension in another of...contact"
Well shit, by that definition every time I heckle Eric Cantor I'm assaulting him.

It's not my fault he's a frightful ninny.
