Protesters in Belarus call for new elections as economic crisis drags on

MINSK, Belarus — About 1,000 protesters have rallied in the capital of Belarus to call for new presidential and parliamentary elections as the country experiences its worst financial crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Although the ex-Soviet nation led since 1994 by authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko takes a hard line against opposition and frequently bans or breaks up protest gatherings, police did not interfere with Saturday’s demonstration in Minsk ...
