McGovern vs. Nixon was the first presidential campaign that I was seriously involved in. Nixon won. Then Nixon went down in flames.

12. Amen to that!
I wasn't old enough to vote in 72, but I would've voted for him had I been.

6. If the American people lived their ideals rather
than just spouting them, George McGovern would have been president and a damned good one at that. Our prayers are with you Senator.

7. Acceptance speech at Democratic Convention 1972
ACCEPTANCE SPEECH OF SENATOR GEORGE MCGOVERN - Miami Beach, Florida

From secrecy and deception in high places; come home, America

From military spending so wasteful that it weakens our nation; come home, America.

From the entrenchment of special privileges in tax favoritism; from the waste of idle lands to the joy of useful labor; from the prejudice based on race and sex; from the loneliness of the aging poor and the despair of the neglected sick -- come home, America.

Come home to the affirmation that we have a dream. Come home to the conviction that we can move our country forward.

Come home to the belief that we can seek a newer world, and let us be joyful in that homecoming, for this “is your land, this land is my land -- from California to New York island, from the redwood forest to the gulf stream waters -- this land was made for you and me.”

So let us close on this note: May God grant each one of us the wisdom to cherish this good land and to meet the great challenge that beckons us home.

8. My first vote was for McGovern
I canvassed for him and was shocked that NJ was so pro-Nixon. I had just graduated from college in Indiana and moved to NJ to work at Bell Labs. It was shocking how angry some people were to those of us advocating for McGovern. I hope he is better soon.

10. I was "too young to vote"...
...just under 18. ("If you are old enough to fight for your country, you are old enough to vote, and old enough to drink") It was the first campaign I seriously paid attention to.

11. My first vote was for George McGovern
And it's because of him I registered as a Democrat. I still have some McGovern campaign material floating around. Things would have been much different for the better if the American people could think clearly.

was the first election I could vote in. I was 21. Voted for every democratic president since then.

17. Excellent book about that election . . .
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 by Hunter S. Thompson

A compilation of Thompson's Rolling Stone coverage of the campaign during the height of his Gonzo era.

18. The Thomas Eagleton fiasco seriously hurt McGovern's campaign
Of course, the 1972 campaign also featured Nixon and the Republicans employing the "Southern strategy" of appealing to the basest instincts of Southern voters who were angry at the Democratic party for supporting progressive causes.

23. He was running against a band of ruthless thugs whose dirty tricks
and appeal to racists and religious unspeakables like Falwell have since become famous--and became Tricky Dick's nickname.

That iw what hurt his campaign.

26. No doubt the dirty tricks hurt
Edited on Thu Oct-27-11 10:12 PM by Art_from_Ark
But the Eagleton affair hurt as well. The news media were making a big deal about Eagleton getting "psychiatric help" (meaning to the average Fred Flinstone voter that Eagleton was a loony), while McGovern initially said he would stand by Eagleton.

Around that time as well, the news media were also constantly talking about the "break-in at the office of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist"-- always "Daniel Ellsberg's *psychiatrist*", never the man's actual name-- in what was an obvious attempt to paint Ellsberg (of Pentagon Papers fame) as a loony.

25. So did the "plumbers" and CREEP and the "secret plan" . . .
Eagleton was a liability and should have been vetted better. He quickly resigned. McGovern ended up running with Shriver - who would have been a great VP.

21. "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail `72" - by Hunter S. Thompson
great book - good insight into both Nixon and McGovern - originally published as monthly articles in Rolling Stone which paid for Hunter to follow the McGovern campaign around for a year. i always liked McGovern.

The NY Times called it: "...the best account yet published of what it feels like to be out there in the middle of the American political process." -- http://www.nytimes.com/1973/07/15/books/thompson-1973-trail.html

It sounds fascinating, especially considering what happened with Eagleton as his running mate... :( :hi:
