World's 'seven billionth baby' is born

Danica May Camacho, a girl born in Philippine capital Manila, is chosen by UN to symbolically mark global population milestone

Jasmine Coleman
The Guardian, Sunday 30 October 2011

The world's seven billionth baby has been born in a packed government-run hospital in the Philippines.

Weighing 2.5kg (5.5lb), Danica May Camacho was chosen by the United Nations to be one of several children around the world who will symbolically represent the global population milestone.

She was delivered just before midnight on Sunday amid an explosion of press camera flashes at Manila's Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital.

The accuracy of the projection has been questioned, with some groups arguing that the figure is more likely to be reached next year.

1. Well, sort of
Symbolically anyway. For a second I thought they were claiming to know to the exact number how many of us are alive and kicking. And that would scare me even more than the fact that there are 7 billion of us (give or take) alive and kicking.

13. This is why I like DU
I can come here and see my own opinions shared in public.

I had a very interesting discussion with a brilliant friend on this subject the other night. Humans going the way of dinosaurs. But I digress.

10. Humans are like fleas on a dog...
Eventually the Earth will shake many of us off! And for good reason!

I know people get all bent out of shape when anyone mentions "population control" but at some point there will be "population control"...Whether it is done by us in a responsible & controlled manner as possible or whether it is done in by mass starvation & other truly horrifying ways imaginable!

Just something to think about.

14. It took 12 years to increase by 1 billion. That took thousands of years, before.
Before we were on the dangerous part of the exponential curve. It seems no one realizes the danger we face.

12 years for a billion people. I'll let others figure out just what resources those billion are going to require. A lot of tires, planes, syringes, schools. We can't do it. I think it must be some unconscious form of suicide.

15. Population growth of a species generally isn't exponential.
Growth appears exponential but then is sharply curtailed once as the resources limit is approached:

16. Human growth has been exponential., for all practical purposes.
Calling it anything else is semantics.

17. Not by a long shot.
It has only appeared exponential for the last hundred years or so. And if it is exponential, then we have unlimited resources.

It was never exponential and will not be exponential.

18. Do you even know what exponential growth is?
I suggest you look it up. Until food supplies are exhausted, biological growth is exponential. And we have not hit that limitation yet.
