Capitol Report: Walker recall effort launched unexpectedly; Dems cry foul Read more: http://host.ma

The recall effort against Republican Gov. Scott Walker has unexpectedly begun.
But instead of being filed by Democrats and grass-roots organizations who have vocalized their intentions to recall Walker for months, the petition was filed by David Brandt of Muskego.
Brandt filed the petition with the state Government Accountability Board Friday afternoon under the committee name "Close Friends to Recall Walker."
Brandt said in the official campaign registration statement that he was filing to "fulfill my friend's last request." He also checked a box that indicates he will not be raising much money toward the effort.
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin, which had announced its intention last month to launch the recall Nov. 15, quickly branded the move a "dirty Republican ploy," but it's not clear what Brandt's loyalties are.

2. As I understand it, it's not, other than the fact that it allows Walker...
...to begin raising cash immediately.

6. We would have liked to have the 2 plus weeks in early January
as a cushion to collect more sigs if necessary. The Holidays are closing in and much talk of not collecting sigs during some time periods. Oh well, it has begun.

I went to a training session last Sunday and we had a good turnout.

There was not much information in this article (probably lots more to come).

But we found out we, in our 23rd district, would be collecting a second petition for the Recall of Repug Terry Moulton (State Senator).

12. Yes, but it will move the petition filing up a week or so. Too
close around the new year for my comfort. But, it is as it is now.

I am set to go along with some friends in the area NOV 15.

Best,

23. umm. Are you sure about this? I thought that once anyone/any group
filed --that became the trigger date to set off the 60 days for ALL groups filing?

That was my understanding --but I like yours better:-)

20. It only allows so many days to collect signatures
and the Dems likely don't have all their gathers together yet. And then theres the money. This guy can't be very serious in actually recalling if he's not raising money, but it does open up the floodgates to Walker. His brothers last wish must have been to make sure Walker doesn't get recalled.

33. Maybe.
But he will be ousted from office in another way, if necessary. He will be voted out. Or, he will go to jail. That investigation could be about him. I think it is.

19. Thanks for this link. Here is an article I read that shows Scott Walkers' buddy Van Hollen making
the call to make two sets of signatures neccessary....

In a letter to Kevin Kennedy, the executive director of the non-partisan, state Government Accountability Board, Van Hollen cited Article XIII, Section 12 of the state Constitution and said the top two elected officers in the state can't be jointly recalled from office.
In a recall election, as opposed to a general election, the governor and lieutenant governor are not treated as a joint partisan ticket, Van Hollen said in a statement.
The decision comes a little more than a week before the Democratic Party of Wisconsin and numerous grass-roots organizations plan to begin collecting signatures on petitions in an effort to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
Van Hollen is a Republican, as are Walker and Kleefisch.

14. It never occurred to any Democrats in this process that Republicans might use this ploy?

This after the Republicans ran fake Democrats to force a primary and muck up the recalls?

Come on, if we expect to succeed in this we will have to be smarter, smarter than the Republicans. I am tired of being on the defensive and being forced to react to Republican dirty tricks both here in Wisconsin and on the national level as well.

was again at our training session last Sunday. We fear they will collect signatures and then just toss them away.

In many ways we have been expecting it.

First recall effort launched against Walker, triggering unlimited fundraising
By Jason Stein and Lee Bergquist of the Journal Sentinel

Updated: Nov. 4, 2011 5:12 p.m. |(591) Comments

Madison - A committee to recall Gov. Scott Walker officially registered with state elections officials Friday but the effort was filed by a man who had made modest donations to Walker and the Republican Party.

The filing triggers a quirk in state law that could prove a powerful advantage for Walker - unlimited fundraising for certain spending.

The state Government Accountability Board said the request was filed Friday afternoon, the first possible date of the recall. To succeed in forcing a recall election of the Republican governor, organizers must gather 540,000 signatures in 60 days.

The petition was filed by David Brandt of Muskego in Waukesha County and the "Close Friends to Recall Walker" committee. Brandt said in the government filing that he was registering a recall committee to "fulfill my friend's last request."

34. It was not filed in Waukesha County
It was filed with the GAB, which is in Madison. There is nowhere in Waukesha that they could file a valid petition that would legally start Walker's time for collecting unlimited donations.

The confusion seems to result from the Journal Sentinel's unclear reporting, which said, "Friday's petition was filed by David Brandt of Muskego in Waukesha County." By that they meant Muskego is in Waukesha County.

From the Comment section:
Brandt likes organizations with the word "Friends" in it.

From the story:

"Brandt filed the petition with the state Government Accountability Board Friday afternoon under the committee name "Close Friends to Recall Walker."

Brandt is a Walker contributor and gave to Friends of Scott Walker.

I HAVE A FEELING BRANDT IS NO FRIEND OF DEMOCRATS (IMHO)
