Eyes of nation on Ohio vote on union-limiting law
Source: AP

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A ballot battle in Ohio that pits the union rights of public workers against Republican efforts to shrink government and limit organized labor's reach culminates Tuesday in a vote with political consequences from statehouses to Pennsylvania Avenue.

A question called Issue 2 asks voters to accept or reject a voluminous rewrite of Ohio's collective bargaining law that GOP Gov. John Kasich signed in March, less than three months after his party regained power in the closely divided swing state.

Thousands descended the Statehouse in protest of the legislation known as Senate Bill 5, prompting state officials at one point to lock the doors out of concern for lawmakers' safety.

The legislation affects more than 350,000 police, firefighters, teachers, nurses and other government workers. It sets mandatory health care and pension minimums for unionized government employees, bans public worker strikes, scraps binding arbitration and prohibits basing promotions solely on seniority.

1. I predict strikes/riots if this is approved. I don't think this 'law' will hold up even if passed.
People aren't going to give these rights up. And I know I wouldn't trust the voting machines/process if it purportedly passes.

3. I just volunteered to be a poll worker this Tuesday.
It will be impossible to tell how people are voting but it will feel good to know I participated in this historic voting process.

If I like it I'll try to do it again next year.

6. I hope they follow through and vote no, it would be a privilege to participate in
historic vote for labor and middle class. Don't be lulled into thinking it is a done deal, the bigger the margin the better.
Koch brothers are spending a lot to defeat workers rights. Voter suppression tactics, early voting restrictions etc take as many people with you as you can.

7. Latest polling shows a 25 point spread with the issue going down in the flames.
Which is the outcome we want.

No on 2 = repeal SB5.

10. No-win ... is there any other way in Ohio?
They would have cut jobs whether or not Issue 2 goes down ... the only difference is who gets the hatchet.

A darned good illustration of the benefits of union membership, if you ask me. (Which is no way implying that no union members will get fired/layed off/outsourced/privatized, only that it may prove slightly more difficult to do so.)

9. The blowback to this type of draconian law will be tremendous at the polls next year.
The Republicans reached too far with this boolshit law.
They want ALL the money to go to the top 1%, because the super rich weren't satisfied with owning 75% of EVERYTHING!!

"Another worry for the unions is the flood of outside campaign money pouring into the state before Tuesday's vote.

According to press reports, a number of groups have been active in the state with television ads and direct mail pieces, such as Alliance For America's Future, Liz Cheney's group, and Citizens United, pushing voters to support Senate Bill 5.

Americans For Prosperity has set up phone banks across the state and has hosted 13 town halls and 6 tele-town halls since August.."
