Santorum: ‘Angel’ award for Penn State’s Sandusky
Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Ex-Sen. Rick Santorum, running for the Republican presidential nomination, in 2002 nominated former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky for a “Congressional Angels in Adoption Award.”

The nomination by Santorum was made in the same year that a Penn State graduate assistant spotted Sandusky allegedly performing a sex act with a young boy in a shower at the university’s athletic complex. He reported the incident a day later to head football coach Joe Paterno.

“Its philosophy is simple: It is easier to develop a child than to rehabilitate an adult,” read the citation from Santorum in an awards dinner program dated Sept. 24, 2002.

The citation was referring to The Second Mile, a charity launched by Sandusky in 1977 to serve disadvantaged children. It was first reported Wednesday by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

1. This wouldn't have anything to do with a "frothy mixture" now would it?

2. Unless Santorum knew about this...
...and there seems no way that he did...

This is a Non-story.

Lots of people lauded Sandusky during those years.

4. I agree... the first and ONLY time I'll ever defend Santorum.....
I'd imagine. But, I can understand how he could have been duped and unless there is info to the contrary that he should have known, I give him a pass.

8. Probably true, but it's ironic as hell. Santorum's whole schtick is his
sanctimonious christianist/homophobic agenda. I'd give most other politicians a pass on this, but Santorum's award is just too ironic not to note. And I wouldn't be too quick to assume he knew nothing about this...I believe Rick had connections into PSU and the BOD. He's been an apologist for pedophile priests, so it's not a big leap that he'd cover for a pedophile in a state institution-

http://www.universalhub.com/2011/rick-santorum-speak-catholic-citizenship-tue-530pm

Rick Santorum also tried to assign blame for the Catholic Church Pedophile Priest scandal on parties other than pedophile priests and church hierarchy.

Santorum fingered "the media" "Boston" and "academic, political and cultural liberalism" which he says "lies at the center of the storm."

It is startling that those in the media and academia appear most disturbed by this aberrant behavior, since they have zealously promoted moral relativism by sanctioning "private" moral matters such as alternative lifestyles. Priests, like all of us, are affected by culture. When the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected. While it is no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm.

Rick Santorum is arguing that formerly sexually pure good-natured priests caught the pedophilia from a sick culture driven by the liberal values of academia emanating from Boston.

9. And, I would surely denounce him if proven otherwise...
Or if he opens that clap-trap to utter any of this kind of bullshit.

He's contemptible for so many reasons... I just don't need to go looking for additional without more facts.

7. What Noise?
I bet that if we looked - there would be MANY politicians (probably many the we like here) that commended Sandusky for his charitable works.

Santorum is a douche - but this story adds nothing to that. Unless he knew about the allegations - and it is doubtful that he did, Penn State did an amazing job of keeping this quiet - this is a non story.

It is a story just on the irony making it a non-story on the merits. Still, it's enough for me to be glad it was posted.

21. yeah, we have to have a good laugh sometimes, with these pathetic Republican
Presidential candidates, this one is a good laugh, totally at his expense.

Could he have picked a worse example? Un-knowingly of course, but he knows nothing about anything anyway EVER!

16. No fan of Santorum, but how was he supposed to know what Sandusky was up to?
The spirit of the charity was a good one. It is a shame that Sandusky used the charity he set up to sexually assault children.

20. Exactly.
Sorry. The OP is guilty of the red herring called guilt by association.

One doesn't need to resort to logical fallacies to make Rick Santorum look like a right wing asshole. Besides, Sontorum does an excellent job of that all by himself.

I doubt he thought Sandusky was anything other than an upstanding pillar of society. I'm sure the senator would nominate almost anyone if he thought it promoted Pennsylvania.

Having said that, the coincidence that he would cite this particular individual for this particular award is stark indeed, and I appreciate how it could be newsworthy in a wry twist of fate.

Maybe Santorum could call and ask why Sandusky didn't choose man on dog and save him some face.

heterosexual man who turns out to be a pedophile. It should Santorum and his ilk think twice about blathering on about gays and what a threat they are to marriage, children, etc.
