Warren Targeted By Rove, Brown By The League of Conservation Voters [VIDEO]
Source: Care2

Crossroads GPS, a Karl Rove run conservative superPAC, allegedly is taking a break from running commercials attacking President Barack Obama. Instead, they are taking on a new target — Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.

According to an email sent out by the Warren campaign, the action group has planned an ad buy worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, all focused on helping ensure that Warren doesn’t win the Massachusetts senate seat. The ad links Elizabeth Warren to the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, and says she associates with “extreme left-wing protesters.”

But Warren isn’t the only one being targeted by outside interest groups. Incumbent Republican Senator Scott Brown is also feeling the heat, with the League of Conservation Voters running a new ad pointing out the Senator’s donations from Big Oil, and asking him to stop voting for tax breaks to support the industry.

I got an email on this from the EW campaign a few hours ago.

Apparently Rove is hard at work, still.

The ad is running in regular rotation in MA markets, already, helped along by media coverage of it, as well.

This is a Swiftboating effort--I expect MA voters are smarter than this, but if anyone wants to send in a few "rebuttal bucks" to EW, here's the link:

2. Well, he's built a new one, and it's gunning for Elizabeth Warren.
I suppose she should be, on the one hand, flattered, but make no mistake--this kind of shit needs answering.

3. why her supporters as a group cannot say they're getting her back.
as in all GOP swiftboat ops the groundwork for swiftboating is done on radio but her supporters will likely have no idea what the local blowhards are saying. which is why the swiftboating works and why it did for clinton and gore and kerry and countless others whose busts hang on the walls in the talk radio trophy room.

5. I've seen the ad in the link five times today. Three times paid,
and twice in news clips.

This is--for now, anyway-- a TV assault and very visual. It's in regular rotation in MA today. It is an appeal to the lowest common denominator, a "facts be damned" exercise.

It might be augmented by a radio assault as well, but they're going for a very clear slice of the voter pie--not just the far-right nuts.

6. the connection to OWS ties right in to the national and local radio attacks on OWS that
are ongoing, everyday, everywhere. and all that percolates all the way to anyone who calls themselves republican- the radio is the main place enough repetition can be done to change reality, to turn the swiftboat lies and rumors into reality.

just as all the GOP candidates ride the limbaugh bandwagon of prechewed talking points - maybe romney and paul less so, but romney in particular has to change course/flip-flop in large part because he gets on the wrong side of team limbaugh.

IMO the GOP PR machine uses visuals, like fox, as icing on radio's lie turd pie, and that's why they're increasingly getting irrational and ignorant candidates.

7. Elizabeth is running for the Senate and this will not be a cakewalk for her.
They just aired the fucking ad again, right ahead of the national evening news. They're wasting no time going for her throat.

This isn't just a GOP thing, though. The message is that she's wonking around with radical political theory while people go without jobs. It's targeted right at the huge (and growing) number of independent voters in this state. Short, 'pithy,' and vicious it is.

8. going to be huge citizens united money there and everywhere but one way to counter that is to
do something completely different: to finally monitor talk radio nationally and locally and respond in time before the unchallenged repetition becomes truth and reality.

and generally protest the stations, shame the local sponsors, and challenge the universities that broadcast sports on those stations and therefore legitimize the lies and swiftboating.

10. I don't mean to be negative, but that's been tried.
The sponsors will laugh and tell you to fuck yourself, and make some snarky First Amendment comments. The hosts will refer to "crybabies" and "whiners" who "can't handle the truth."

The gloves are off; this is ugly and it will get uglier. I wish I could be more sanguine.

My hope is that, because EW is smarter than SB, she'll be able to wipe the floor with him in debate.

13. radio stations seldom get protested. local sponsors seldom get called. national actions are not
very effective because they can line up republican biz owners to replace national sponsors and some sponsors throw a little to the progressive talkers to cover their asses.

try calling local sponsors and do it right and you might be surprised. few will defend the limbaughs unless you're in the seriously fucked up states.

but i think the best way is to get the universities to pull their sports. the monopoly will not survive as is if the unis start looking for alts.

if it was any other state it could work. But MA has a lot of college graduates, so this will definitely backfire.

16. Romney lied like a rug, ya know. He was the original flip flopper!
Pro choice, he was! Such a bullshitter!

And it's a funny thng about MA--they sometimes like a GOP governor when the legislature gets too crazy. We have a fairly "weak governor" system, so it's nothing but a thing, but on occasion, a GOP governor serves to slow down the rambunctiousness of a hell-raising (and not always pristine) largely "D" legislature.

Brown lied like a rug, too--he came off to the inattentive as a great "independent" (and we have a lot of those here), and even managed to con a few of my neighbors with his stupid coat and his truck. Of course, the minute he got in, he started snuggling up to Big Oil like a cheap date. Also, Martha just didn't bring it in that contest, and she pretty much acknowledged that after the fact--she was far too cerebral and detached.

Just organizing a "D" candidate was a total drill--for awhile there, on his deathbed, for all intents and purposes, Ted was making noises about his WIFE (who's a nice gal, but she's from Louisiana, fachrissake) running, or taking his seat before he shuffled off this mortal coil--it was a very convoluted and distracted process that brought us the Brown race--way too much time was spent on His Nekkidness, to the detriment of other issues. The guy really is stupid, too, but because the race was truncated, he was able to hide that from a lot of people.

EW is smart as hell, but make no mistake--she's human, she's real. She is NOT detached--she brings it. She has the ability to draw people in and fire 'em up. It will not be easy but with loyal backers and hard work, hopefully she'll be our Senator-elect this time next year. I'll do my bit.

18. Citizens everywhere are furious -- and not just in the US -- about what the banks
perpetrated penalty-free. And that is precisely what Elizabeth Warren is angry about. These ads just make her more electable.

No matter what things happen at OWS, voters will see Elizabeth Warren, get out to meet her and then, after her sincerity is apparent to them, will vote for her.

The Republicans have a real problem. Scott Brown is the ultimate plastic, made-up, Ken-doll candidate.

OK, your choice is between a Ken doll and a real, warm, inspired human being. Which will you choose?

Republicans are in panic mode and rightfully so. The more they try to pick on Warren, the more opportunities they give her to show her old-fashioned gumption and just how ready she is for the Senate.

20. Those ads do NOT make her more electable. Listen to what the narrator is saying.
They completely mischaracterize her intent and her POV, as well as the intent of OWS.

They portray OWS as a bunch of radical and violent crazies intent on taking down the US government, with her as the Chief Planner in Charge.

The final nail at the end of the ad speaks to people wanting jobs, not radical bullshit theories--as though Scott Brown is Mister Jobs, and EW is "Crazy lady who wants to burn down the Capitol" --it's classic Rovian smear from one end to the other.

You can't paper this over and call it a good thing. It's not just sop to the right, it's an earworm to the unemployed/underemployed independent voter (and we have many of those here).

She's already had to make the rounds on the local TV newsers doing heavy pushback on this. Her very first statement was that she supports OWS so long as they "stay within the law." What does that tell you? She's clearly feeling some heat from this thing. Any time you have to answer charges, you're not prosecuting your own agenda.

Do not sit back comfortably--this is a problem, and it needs to be addressed, smacked down, and managed. Every time there's violence at an OWS site, it does not help EW.

All politics is local, after all.
