Australia passes plain-packaging cigarette law
Source: The Guardian

Australia is to become the first country to enforce the plain packaging of cigarettes but tobacco companies have vowed to fight the new legislation in court.

From December next year, all cigarettes will be sold in olive green packs, which research has shown is least appealing to smokers.

Under the new laws, approved by the upper house of parliament, no trademark brand logos will be permitted on any packaging of tobacco products, although companies will be able to print their name and the cigarette brand in small, prescribed font on the packets.

The boxes will continue to carry stark health warning messages and pictures, which will cover 75% of the front of the pack and 90% of the back.

Meanwhile, a federal court in the US has put an injunction on graphic warning labels on cigarette packages.

1. But that's because corporations are people, and people are sheeple.
Follow the money.

2. The Australian Labor Government is disliked, villified
and under much pressure. BUT week after week more and more
progressive policies are being enacted.
All the Leader of the opposition , Tony Abbott, promises is to
wind back all of these laws. The conservatives have become the
party of NO.

Very easy really when you don't have anything constructive to
say.

3. As an ex-smoker I think it is a great idea!
I had this weird 'brand loyalty'.

4. Ugh, WHY? How about lifting the BAN on e-cigarettes?
Seriously! Personally if I still smoked, I love olive green. So wow, wtg. What a pointless action.
As if this would ever reduce the number of smokers. What a joke.

If peeps in Australia could legally get vaping supplies though, that would actually be awesome. That'd be a worthwhile endeavor.

If encouraging people to quit smoking was the true intent here, lawmakers would move to lift the ban on the sale of e-cigs and supplies in Australia. More people could quit smoking if there was such an easy legal alternative!

LIFT THE BAN!
