LePage: Cut welfare and MaineCare or we’ll have to cut education
Source: Bangor Daily News (Maine)

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage told members of the Higher Education Council on Wednesday that if lawmakers do not reduce Medicaid and welfare benefits, education funding will need to be cut to bring the state budget into balance.

“Eighty percent of the budget is Medicaid and welfare and education,” he said. “If the Legislature has the political will to fix the problem, education will keep the additional $63 million we gave it.”

LePage urged the leaders of the state’s colleges and universities, public and private, to encourage their lawmakers to support his proposals to reduce Medicaid, called MaineCare in this state, and welfare spending.

He has not spelled out his proposals to address the projected $70.9 million shortfall in DHHS this budget year, but in comments to the group Wednesday he said Maine should not provide coverage through MaineCare that is greater than the national average.

LePage can "kiss my butt" (his favorite phrase for anyone that opposes his stupid teabagger agenda) - and fire his daughter ($41K per year with full state benefits) first - before he cuts Medicaid and "welfare"...

yup

6. How much does LePage suck?
He is a prickly, little a-hole who uses his position to hire his family. Who needs health care and education and fuel assistance and housing when you have friends in high places? What a selfish, stupid man he is. The people in western Maine put him in office and they are among the poorest people in New England. Go figure. If the two normal candidates hadn't split the sane vote, he'd never have won.

I hope the fact that people repealed LePage's voter suppression tactic means that his days are numbered.

8. Sorry but, giving a choice between cutting services that help people to eat and get health care
vs. supporting higher education, there is no choice. LePage, who allegedly was practically a street kid, should know this.

10. cut governor's pay first & all of Maine's top-payed public heads FIRST
THEN TAX THE RICH. if they try to leave the State, create a flee-the-state fee, cell phone companies created a similar fee........it works to an extant.

13. I don't think Maine's Governor gets rich off the salary
$70,000. But he does get a nice house to live in. Which in LePage's case is good since he doesn't own any property in Maine. Just Florida.
