He is now free on bail.

While the corporate media fall all over themselves making excuses for why these tragic crimes were not reported, when they went on for more than 15 years, the fact remains that there is one set of rules for the rich and powerful and another set of rules for the rest of us.

This concept has destroyed the foundation of justice in this country.

6. That bail, is itself a crime -
Which I presume is your point and with which I agree totally.

This creature seems to be denying all. When it sinks in - he will be GONE. Either by using money and ped. connections to escape (Thailand?) or suicide.

I want and need him to SUFFER for a long time.

24. Exactly.
Suppose for instance that the law doesn't allow for life without parole for a given charge, but the number and severity of said charges merit it. So the prosecutor "stacks" charges and goes for consecutive sentences. Then even if the law says someone gets a parole hearing after they've served half of their sentence, it would still be 230 years.

70. Bernie Stole Money From Rich Folks
Cons can live with that-it's just money, a bigger and better rip-off than the bank robbers do. He robbed the bank from the inside. Cons can respect the ingenuity of a good scam. Nobody died directly, and his victims are all on the outside

Child molestation, especially if the victims were poor or minority, is another matter. Some of the old coach's victims might have compensated by going to the other side of the law, either through joining a gang or drugs. Not to mention relatives or friends. Nobody respects a child molester, not even other child molestors.

84. it's his decision whether or not he wishes to be identified
and I'm guessing he doesn't want to be since he has not come forward.

His identity and testimony isn't necessary as there are already quite a number of victims willing to testify. The priority should be the mental and emotional well-being of this (now) young man, and therefore, he should be permitted to come forward or not as he chooses.

Let's not be forgetting the needs of the victims here in the desire to punish Sandusky.

21. but a grand jury report is an indictment, an accusation- not an impartial review by a jury of ones
peers or a panel of judges. No, I am not suggesting that he is probably innocent. But being that there have been many cases where accusations and indictments did not always pan out, I would find it prudent to wait and see before we hang him from the highest tree. Maybe he is guilty of everything in the Grand Jury indictment. Maybe he is guilty of far more than what can be found in the indictment. Maybe he is guilty of some of the accusations, but not all of them. Though unlikely and unpopular to suggest something that sounds so implausible, if he did for some unexplainable reason turn out to be innocent of everything in the Grand Jury indictment - It wouldn't be the first time such a thing has happened. Call me old fashioned and square, but I would like to wait until all the facts have been carefully, dispassionately and impartially examined before I reach any absolute conclusions.

33. He admitted in 1998, to campus police & 1 victim's mom that he sexually assaulted her son.
He ADMITTED it! They even got it on tape! Read the grand jury report - pages 16-18. Everyone involved knew he was guilty. They knew he was a pedophile! That was in 1958. Penn State asked the Centre County DA to drop the case. When the 58 football season was over, after a spring of'59 bowl game in Texas, Paterno told him he was no longer going to succeed Paterno as head coach, as had been promised to him, and he was forced to "retire".

Disgustingly, Penn State/Paterno allowed Sandusky to keep his office, phone & email at Penn State, along with full access to the sports facilities, including the infamous showers, PLUS he was allowed to offer youth football camps on Penn State Branch Campus. In other words Paterno et al allowed this monster to flaunt and benefit from connections with Paterno and Penn State in his continued trolling for young victims for THIRTEEN YEARS!

I hope the civil lawsuits result in Paterno having to pay every penny of his pension to the victims.

him on occasions. But denied anything more than that. This is actually on page 19-20 of the Grand Jury Report:
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/11/06/sports/ncaafootball/20111106-pennstate-document.html

No question that the evidence against Jerry Sandusky sounds very incriminating. But indictments are not determinations of guilt. What "everybody knows" or knew are not determinations of guilt. Of course, given the scale of evidence, I would have to say that he is probably guilty. But what we have not had is an impartial and dispassionate review of all the evidence and all the testimony from a judge or a jury and/or any other legal body. Given that there have been numerous times in which indictments and accusations have turned out to be less than completely true; sometimes not true at all, sometimes partly true. Sometimes the truth was worse than the indictment. This might be one of those times. But as of now, we just don't know.

72. A few corrections
1) He admitted to "hugging" the boy naked in the shower, which is, of course, a sexual assault. But he did not portray it as a sexual assault. That's little different than a full confession. This is a crucial point, I think, unless you want to lump the State college and University Police detective in on some cover-up. The Grand Jury did not want to do that, and did not.

2) You have no evidence that Penn State asked Gricar to drop the case. There is no evidence of that whatsoever. The head of the PSU University police told the University police detective that the case was over when Gricar decided not to pursue it, but Gricar's decision itself is mysterious, and there is certainly no evidence that the University caused Gricar to do anything. That's just false as far as we know. Perhaps other evidence will come out on this point, but there is no clear evidence for why Gricar decided not to pursue the case at this point. Indeed, it's one of the great mysteries of this case thus far, since the phone conversations, as you point out, do seem damning for at least Inappropriate Contact charges.

I certainly hear many stories of girls being molested on the news.

Usually girls are molested within a "family" setting. Incest, or a stepfather/boyfriend of a mother. Most of the abuses in the Catholic Church have been boys, and obviously there's a widespread scandal there.

61. I don't think so. What was the last scandal of children being abused? Was it girls or boys?
Think about it.

Also:

"The Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (NIS-3) revealed that in America, girls’ risk of abuse was 33% higher than that of boys. The difference was due to girls’ increased risk of sexual abuse. Girls experienced sexual abuse at more than three times the rate that boys did (Sedlak & Broadhurst, 1996)."

If there was a widespread scandal of men molesting young girls it wouldn't be a big story? Are you trying to say it wouldn't?

I see stories all the time about sexual abuse of girls and boys.....none of them make national news.

The fact is, the majority of abuse in the Catholic Church (which is the ongoing scandal) has been against boys. The Penn State scandal involved boys. I don't know what can be done about that to create "balance" if that's what you want. It's all disgusting, and I don't see the reason to politicize it.

And it makes me fume that when it's GIRLS abused, the abuse doesn't go on endlessly for weeks and months. When it's BOYS, watch out, there will be no other news on the media but that.

And that, is my point. I kinda thought I'd made it clear before.

I get it. We know you don't think men can be sexually harassed. Now you are up in arms because a scandal involving a prominant institution happens to involve boys as victims. The facts can't be changed. It's a big case because it involves a major academic institution, and if young girls were involved it would be just as big.

The bottom line is that one of the reasons young boys are in more danger of being involved in a widespread molestation scandal (PLEASE READ THOSE WORDS, NOT SAYING BOYS ARE MOLESTED MORE THAN GIRLS) is that we still shield them less from men who are coaches, scout leaders, priests......most people would not feel comfortable allowing their young daughter to be coached or mentored by an adult male. Of course, cases like this remind us why no child is safe.

63. Many more girls, you're right. Here is a website.

http://www.domesticviolenceservices.com/female-children.html

The Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (NIS-3) revealed that in America, girls’ risk of abuse was 33% higher than that of boys. The difference was due to girls’ increased risk of sexual abuse. Girls experienced sexual abuse at more than three times the rate that boys did (Sedlak & Broadhurst, 1996).

34. One Sick Puppy
If they put him in the general population he won't last long, as bad as many are in prison they see child predators as the lowest of the low and tend to take matters into their own hands.

There are plenty of enablers who should do time as well.

47. Where Are The Victims?
If this has been happening over the last 15 years, these 'young boys' are grown up. Why aren't any of them coming forward. Surely one or more should be talking at this point. Is it about Shame? I think so. Women who have been raped come forward ... but when it is young boys/men getting raped or molested .. it is forbidden to talk about it.

52. why should they be talking?
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 08:42 PM by fishwax
They've talked to the grand jury -- six of them, anyway, as the other two described in eye witness accounts have not been identified. Who do you think they should be talking to?

"Women who have been raped come forward ... but when it is young boys/men getting raped or molested .. it is forbidden to talk about it."

Well, there are unfortunate dynamics of personal and public shame at work in those situations as well.

69. Rather hostile environment to come forward in when the perps are lionized by the community.
Not too good for their life expectancy, perhaps. If it'd been the janitor as someone had suggested, maybe. But these guys were treated like gods and their followers might have killed them for blasphemy. They could see they were regarded as dirt.

51. I guess he's not going to get out on good behavior or early release due to over crowding.over
It's going to be rough times ahead as he'll probably get first hand experience what he did to all those little kids. Or, he'll spend the rest of his life in protective custody and be in solitary 23 hr/day. Not much to look forward to. At least he'll have protection which is more than his victims had.

55. 150: that's the average # of kids serial pedophiles molest before being caught
We'll never know how many kids Sandusky hurt.

His being out on bail just goes to show how little the justice system really thinks of victims of rape when the perpetrator is a rich, white male.

57. Some states still have the death penalty
for child sexual abuse. This was relatively recently (last 10-15 years) adjudicated by SCOTUS, and it is allowed.

Apparently he may have done this to a child in Texas, he could be in for more than jail time.

80. Sandusky's *unsecured bail* judge is a volunteer for Sandusky's Second Mile charity.
Penn State scandal: Judge had ties to Jerry Sandusky charity

November 13, 2011 | 5:50 pm

Amy Hubbard reports in the LA Times blogs:

.....

Meanwhile, a news outlet reported that the judge who granted unsecured bail for alleged molester Jerry Sandusky is a volunteer for Sandusky's charity.

Deadspin said: Although "prosecutors requested $500,000 bail and that Sandusky be required to wear a leg monitor," Judge Leslie Dutchcot ordered Sandusky freed on $100,000 unsecured bail. She ordered that he "pay nothing unless he failed to show up for a court hearing."

Newsman Keith Olbermann, among others, tweeted his outrage at the report: "Beyond belief: Judge who set unsecured bail for #PennState figure Sandusky is a volunteer for Sandusky's charity."

Judge Dutchcot's attorney profile with Goodall & Yurchak lists her volunteer work with the Second Mile charity.

.....

As noted elsewhere, this judge must fancy herself as a new colleague of Scalia, Thomas, Roberts and Alito.

And Lady Justice mourns.
