Pew study: Not many would benefit from Gingrich's 'path to legality'

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich recently declared his support for a "path to legality" for undocumented immigrants who have been in the U.S. for longer terms, have paid taxes and have strong family and community ties.

"If you've been here 25 years and you got three kids and two grandkids, you've been paying taxes and obeying the law, you belong to a local church, I don't think we're going to separate you from your family, uproot you forcefully and kick you out," Gingrich said at the recent CNN debate on national security.

It turns out that might not include a lot people.

A study released this week by the Pew Hispanic Centers estimates that there are currently 10.2 million unauthorized adult immigrants in the United States, of which two-thirds -- or roughly 6.8 million -- have been in the country for at least 10 years.

Good! It seems to be a reasonable compromise between 100% deportation and 100% amnesty. But still I wouldn't want Gingrich to be president because of his other conservative views favoring the 1%. Seems that Gingrich is pulling a Ron Paul: reasonable view on one issue (in this case immigration, Paul's case drugs and defense) but garbage elsewhere.

but, I don't think it's ideas.

Do you like the requirements for:
1) Procreation (might be used to discriminate against men)
2) An even 25 years of proven residency (20's not good enough)
3) Church membership (might be a First Amendment problem there)
4) Obeying the law (if you used a fake ID, is that automatically identity theft?)
5) Then there's the local board, which gets to use nothing but personal prejudice to compel the forces of ICE to either deport or leave you alone.
